Utilizing environmental factors to your advantage is a tactic as old as conflict itself.

Also, the Klingons continuing to press an attack even when the battle isn't going their way is a very Klingon thing to do. If Garth knew anything about Klingons, which he obviously did, he would have known that.

If you are a Federation Citizen you grew up in an almost conflict free Environment. And Starfleet also pride themself with being a force of peace that choose diplomacy over battle. You can't really blame a young cadet for not being familiar with even the basic rules of combat.

This page made me think of Sisko's speech about Earth.

Commander Sisko: The trouble is Earth!

    Major Kira: Really.

Commander Sisko: On Earth, there is no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet Headquarters and you see paradise. Well it's easy to be a saint in paradise, but the Maquis do not live in paradise! Out there, in the Demilitarized Zone, all the problems haven't been solved yet! Out there, there are no saints! Just people! Angry, scared, determined people, who are going to do whatever it takes to survive, whether it meets with Federation approval or not!

Exactly. And I really like to think Nogura truly believes that and is willing to do all sorts of stuff to make sure that Earth stays that way. At least while he's in charge of Starfleet. I also like to believe that Nogura led to the military feel of the fleet from the 2260s up through the 2280s before he handed the reins over to Morrow and then his influence just carried through for decades before Starfleet's 'complacency' kicked in.

There's a typo on the fourth panel, first speech bubble.

"Commander, make I ask a more personal question?"

Gah! I hate that I miss these after reading them like 8 or 9 times looking for typos!

Oh! Right! Now I remember where I know him from. Took me a moment, 'cause I didn't care for the name last chapter.

He's vintage Fasa villain right there, retooled to work about 20 years before the original Triangle sourcebook was set. ;)

So, is his Starfleet backstory your doing or does that come from the sourcebook? Ether way he just became so much more interesting. I'm looking forward to the confrontation between Galven and him.

His name, him being half-Orion, and trying to rise to the top of the Syndicate were all definitely part of the FASA backstory. I honestly don't know about the Starfleet background, I'd have to double-check (I was researching this and writing it between 3 and 4 years ago now lol) but all of the bits surrounding his backstory and fleshing it out along with his crew and fellow Orions is definitely all me.

I'm playing a bit with the timeline too as the FASA Triangle book was set pretty firmly in the 2280s and I'm in the 2260s. Specifically we're still pre-Balance of Terror at this point.

He is crafty. One doesn't rise up to a small fleet captain in a group of ruthless pirates by being careless.

We've been slowly getting to know Hant and Necole ;) I am also not above killing characters, I just don't go all Walking Dead or Game of Thrones about it
