While the ST selfdestruct had moderate results at best, the worst selfdestruct sequence came from ST: Nemesis. Really, what use is a self-destruct if it gets knocked out by battledamage while much more sensitive systems continue to work? Couldn't they just rig the warp core to blow up or something? It happens all the time when they don't want it, shouldn't be that hard to do a core breach on purpose. *looks at a nearby wrench with a frightening expression.*
Or at least, I think there was a scene with Picard ordering a selfdestruct either before or after the ram. It's been a while since I saw it.
