I managed it with what's marked as 6 segments. If you choose even numbers you get a straight horizontal line that you can use as the base of the dome, odd numbers of segments are slightly curved. It seems like only 6 segments so far produce a "perfect" pattern, all the other settings leave you with spare triangles. I still haven't tried all the possible segments.

To make the inner triangles, I just stenciled the original object back onto the inner most polygons after bevelling. I didn't try using the smart shift (can't remember what it's called at the moment), but with some thought it's definitely possible and fairly easy. There may be some more advanced options to manage your edges while constructing something like this but it'll not be anything I've used.
