Hey everyone,
The project has now moved to a stage where the team is looking to get started on preliminary concept design. This is an "original universe" project, so as you can imagine, there's a very wide scope to stretch your creative wings. Eventually the project will require designs for everything- environments, interiors, characters, and transport (both spacefaring and land-based) as well as smaller items such as tools, personal survival equipment, and weapons- there really is something for everyone at this stage.
What the fledgling Art Department is in need of now is people who are interested and capable of designing characters and transport-style craft. Massive experience is not essential, but you must be capable of presenting, explaining and translating your concepts to a 3D modeller, and be aware of the limitations inherent in designing for CG Production.
There are no hard and fast rules regarding style or format, so it's a very open brief. The only specifics are that we are not designing for Star Trek or some other "utopian" future environment. We're looking at the Rebel contingent in Star Wars, Blade Runner, New BSG and the Marines from the Alien franchise as stylistic pointers to developing a
unique industrial look, so anyone with a passion for well-used industrial-style technology should really enjoy designing within this concept. We're very keen to keep this as realistic as possible, while developing a unique style.
Now here comes the bit that you all know and love. As usual, the team as it stands can't offer you riches beyond your wildest dreams, or a seat at Pixar for your efforts. Anyone who chooses to help out will be doing so out the goodness of their hearts, to have a bit of fun designing pretty much whatever they like with a bunch of guys that are silly enough to want to put it all together.
What I will say is this:
This is not another "holy ****, its another fan take on a copyrighted franchise, its got as much chance of making money as a 30 stone prostitute no matter how good it is" project.
Right now, it's a group of guys who just want to see how far they can push themselves while trying to do something that so many others have failed at, but the original nature of the concept means that it could go much further than that if we get it right. Who knows what's possible, after all- every great story started with someone holding a pen, right?
Anyone with any questions, or wishing to volunteer their time and expertise, may post here, or send a PM to either Freak, Andrew March, or myself.
Regards,
Greg.
