Submarines Here's a few submarines I've been working on. It's an original design based on Russian Typhoon and Oscar II class subs. I drew 3 models and I'll post the other 2 later. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() the torpedoes are my design and the missiles are Russian Klub 3m54e cruise missile, P-800 Oniks stealth ramjet anti-ship cruise missile, and RSM-40 nuclear ICBM with MIRV warheads. As for the sub its got 27 vertical launch tubes, 4 533mm torpedo tubes, and 2 711mm torpedo tubes (rear facing). It has 1 reactor and 2 turbines. There are 6 sonar arrays, 1 in the front, 2 on each side, and a towed rear array. Instead of a conventional periscope it has a floating buoy design that is tethered to a winch so it can be raised and lowered. The winch cable is much longer than a conventional periscope, making periscope depth much deeper. The buoy has video, thermal, and night vision cameras with 100x zoom. It also has a depth sensor, comm array, and Geiger counter. The sub also has a powerful computer core, large cargo bay, and the mess hall can accommodate the entire crew at one time. It also has a 3 person lockout chamber in the forward section. submilitarymodelzw1.png

The sphere in the bow is your sonar array, yes? It looks as if it is accessible from the pressure hull. Is it in a free-flood zone of the boat? You might also consider just a bit more shielding for the reactor compartment. It's not uncommon to place water and/or fuel oil tanks (for the emergency diesel generator, if present) as common bulkheads with the RC to provide stand-off distance and shielding. (Especially if you're the poor bastard sitting Reactor Operator with the core just a few meters over your head! )

yeah I didn't really think about that. All the drawings I've ever seen don't have much more shielding than that. I don't really have time to change it though, especially since I have 2 other versions of the sub. And no, the forward array isn't dry, it's just got a catwalk that leads to it so you can access it as long as the forward tank's not flooded. Here my next version: the salvage model. ![]() The biggest differences are that the forward torpedo storage compartment has been turned into the ship's stores and the missiles tubes have been removed to make a HUGE cargo bay. Also, the rear torpedoes have been removed to make room for a rover with a thousand foot tether and extra battery back-ups. so what do yall think?

I like this a lot. I have a question though, how are the torpedoes loaded into the hull during a resupply? It doesn't look like there is an easy way to do it, other than hauling them through real tight staircases. I'm thinking something like this: http://www.war44.com/images/German/subs/2/sub3.jpg

Could be worse - on the 637 class in particular and most SSNs in general, not only do the weapons have to go through a tiny little hatch at an angle, once inside, you have to take up the deck plates in the upper level ops passageway and the mess deck on middle level to drop the weapons down to the torpedo room. Matter of fact, looking at the schematic, that's probably not too far from what they have to do on airsoft's boat. Come in through the cargo hatch, forward between the VLS tubes, pull up the deck plates in the mess hall, then drop 'em down to torp storage below.

Right on the money J. Wilde. I had thought about having them loaded vertically through a hatch in the mess hall ceiling, but I figured it's stupid to have another hole in the pressure hull when there's a giant one with a crane close by. lol

Is this meant for surface running, over sub service running? That would explain the bow to some extent.

I asked because the bow has a better shape for surface running than subsurface running.
