Soviet Assault Suit

I recently got a Wacom, and Corel Painter and started learning how to use the oil paints, this is the first thing i've tried painting with them. It's basically an armoured and powered suit, this guy would storm enemy ships, punching holes in the hull from the inside out with that ridiculously huge gun.

most of its still roughed in aside from the helmet, and i'm not happy with the legs at all i'l redo their pose and shape i think, but its my first shot at painting something thats dark and reflective and using something other than photoshops airbrush and a mouse!

Wow.. I just got a Wacom intuos 3 and painter X myself a few weeks back, I wish what I was doing looked a fraction as good as yours. I'm still at the can't draw a straight line phase. Did you find any good tutorials on Painter?

I think a lot of its down to how much practice you've had at drawing and painting those techniques should transfer over, i looked through a couple of tutorials but not to teach me how to paint, even so i really should read some more since i've got tons to learn about it i'm sure. basically though I just dived straight in since its pretty similar in operation to photoshop. drawing a straight line can be a bit of bugger, i find that easier on real paper though my initial (and way too hurried) sketch was with the wacom. and i always get my pen/tablet/screen orientation mixed up whenever i come back from taking a break and the lines go off where i don't want them to go until my brain registers whats happening. The only actual tips i can give you is to paint big - the original is over 2000 pixels wide. and i'd suggest you just rough things in then get in as close as you can to paint the detail and sort out your blending, you'll have a lot more control that way, if you aren't doing that already. hope that helps ya, not much help probably though, sorry, just keep practising!

Knight, LOL, just wait until i actually know what i'm doing

Thanks for the tips. I'll give the bigger is better approach a try. My biggest issue is, being left handed, I've always had to have paper at a really funky angle to write without smudging, and that carried over into my pen and paper drawing technique. So with the tablet I'm basically having to reteach myself to draw because I always angle it like I would a sketchpad. But your work has really inspired me so I wont be throwing my tablet off the balcony yet.

yeah, i've found i'm retraining myself to a degree, and i can see how your left handedness is hampering you. tbh though, i'd carry on with sketching on paper and scanning, then use the wacom for the painting i think you'll get the best results that way. its much easier to rotate the paper and ghost in straight lines and so on than it is bugger about with the wacom.
