Quote: It should really take cues from the Scout in Insurection and the Federation Fighter in DS9, with maybe a teeny bit from the Flyer, and a slight pinch of even the Argo. At that point the hard part is getting the Viper influences in. The easiest way is through the engines. While the Scout has teeny engine ports, it's easy to imagine that the hull detail that extends from them are impulse engines too. They look a lot like the advanced Viper's engines. http://www.lcarscom.net/fsd/art/images/ica-6.gif For weapons, the Scout also has a neat, large, but compact, phaser array. ![]() It may not be right for the fighter though, the Scout is called a scout after all and where as the Fighter in DS9 had eight pulse phasers, and the Type's 10 and 18 had what looked like what could be pulse phasers. It still needs an omni directional weapon though, so, pulse phasers, two large ones, or multiple smaller ones, plus two large phaser arrays could be really good. Or smaller arrays placed to cover all arcs, such as on other shuttles. Anyway, the Argo, I like it's impulse engine exhausts, it would keep the design really up to date. I wouldn't use the folding wings though. One thing we get from the Federation Fighter, Scout, and Argo are huge nacelles. They need to be about as long as the entire craft and have a larger cross section than a normal shuttle's nacelles would have. Another thing to consider is how Federation shuttle craft have their cockpits forward. That will be hard to work into a long nose design with a large back. The Scout sort of does it but it doesn't have to really look like a Viper, just give the impression that it has something to do with it and I didn't really get that feeling from your attempt, I think you can pull from more. The Federation Fighter has a crew of two, the Scout had one, the Delta Flyer had three or four. You might want two since it has only one role, combat and will have a complex weapon system. It doesn't need an engineer and science or ops station, just a pilot and weapons officer. You might also want to consider that when the Delta Flyer was being designed in the show, Tom Paris thought about putting small wings on it and ended up deciding against them.

Jonny Boys Viper Design? Major Diarrhia, Thanks for your comments and your input on how to better my version of Jonny's Viper. I thought long and hard today about what you said. An I looked at the current Federation fighter, Venture Class-scout and the Argo Shuttle schematics. I came to a conclusion that I want to stay true to Jonny's Viper design and the basic design of the Battlestar Galactica Viper fighters. An since the Viper fighter is about the same size as the current federation fighter, I just don't see how I can redesign the Viper to your specifications you mentioned, it just would be to difficult to do. An me personally it would not look like a Viper fighter anymore. Then theres the point of not having wings on the Viper. I Looked at the Argo and the current Federation fighter, both of thse small craft have wings. Then theres Galens Gryphon Class-Shuttle and Kadens Orcus Class-Starfighter, both of those vessels have wings as well. One thing I did try was putting Tail fins on my version of the Viper, but in the end I could not find a suitable tail design. The reason why I designed the Viper the way I did, is because its more of a stealth fighter, thats the reason why the impulse engines, warp engines, pulse phaser and the torpedo launcher are concealed underneath the fusalage and the wings of the fighter. Right now its all up to Jonny Boy, if he approves of my design or not!

In that case go for it and the only advice I can really give is don't compromise your design. I was making a ship a few days ago for a game based on an in-game design. I had the pieces down in a way I liked and it already had inspiration from the original but then moved them to make it fit the other ship more. It ended up not looking as good as it did before the final changes.

Sooooo.... been a while, hasn't it? Yep, I've been pretty busy with my new yob, and I haven't been able to get time to work on anything... until tonight. I was inspired once again by all of the attention and input you guys have been providing. I'm still amazed that you guys are still bumping the thread. You have no idea how much I appreciate the fact that someone other than myself is interested in this silly little (big?) project. Having said that, I was particularly inspired by blackbird's design for the Viper. it has some similarities to my original design, but somehow it looks more Viper-ish, and I like the lines, especially the nose and wings. So, I took a few minutes to block out the basic shape for my mark II Viper design. This is just a tease . When I get more free time, I'll definitely get crackin on the damn thing. Thanks again to blackbird

And the blackbird, last I checked, is not a fighter but a spy plane. Personally, I don't really care that much about the fighter, Star Trek doesn't really use fighters. It's the Galactica I wanna see finished and rendered in 3D glory. | |
