Societies collapse because of things like corruption, social injustice, unequal distribution of wealth; basically where the majority are pressed to the point where they will not stand for it any more, the military are coerced into taking control or the system is so rife with incompetence and corruption that stronger nations start to emerge and take chunks out of the other society.
