It was explained in the DVD extras: I think Dykstra mentioned some geometric puzzle toy that they used straight or as a basis to build its own model, motorizing its parts. Also, they had a crude electronic frame buffer to do some image manipulation so that the thing looked like the output of some lab instrument.
I'll check the DVD later to see if I can be more precise.
