When they traveled to a yellow system, they would become superpowered. Kryptonite could be used to control them. ![]() It also affects unpowered kryptonians, but not as much.

The science of Kryptonite changes depending on what you're reading. They were terribly inconsistent over the years. Officially, here's the story: There was a nuclear war a few hundred years prior to the explosion, using nuclear devices FAR more advanced than our nukes. If you remember, Krypton was made up quite a bit by the miracle mineral Sunstone, which not only grows but also takes on the properties of surrounding substances. A huge nuclear blast of their old capital city started a chain reaction at the core of the planet, which was basically the sunstone converting to Kryptonite due to the radiation. Over the years, it became more and more unstable. Jor'El began researching it when miners starting coming up from the shafts deathly ill. By the time the council would listen to him, though, the crystals ripped the planet open, as they were growing uncontrollably. The entire thing about chunk of his planet getting irradiated in space stems from the movies, which are an entirely different world of their own, especially considering that in the movies, a supernova of their red sun caused the destruction of Krypton. In the comics, there is still an asteroid belt where Krypton once was, made purely of Kryptonite. Two Supermen from different universes used this to drag Superboy Prime(who had turned evil) through, and eventually through the sun, in order to strip the boy of his powers. It worked on all three, and the main Superman lost his powers for a year due to it.

sum1 mentioned tiberium i noticed, and from the science blurb on its possible workins, tiberium is similar in respect, but more deadly, the radiation emitted from tiberium "in story" either adds or breaks away electrons from atoms like a sun does creating elements, slowly turning that it effects into tiberium, obviously harmful to humans for that reason, mayb there is a link of ideas, crystals taking properties off each other, radiation causing spreading?

It would be interesting to have a Superman story arc where kryptonite exponentially grows like Tiberium, and was the cause of Krypton's destruction when it turned from a promising energy source into a weapon (by Zod) and finally an ecological disaster. Lex Luthor turning from venture capitalist obsessed with this strange, growing new mineral to a Kane like figure.

Cool pic, but I thought tiberium before kryptonite, too. ![]() Hmm, Lex as Kane... I wouldn't know who to root for -- my favourite VG bad guy, or Superman.
