You have to remember the scale here, these engines are huge, over a couple thousand feet long. They would have massive structural bracing just to absorb the thrust from the engines, which would far surpass the recoil from the guns. Also, the later turrets on Pegasus, and by extension on Prometheus, don't seem to have the prominent cockpit that the ones on Galactica have, so they may be unmanned.
I'm sorry but I don't buy the Explanation of the guns it's lazy!
It could work if you placed a surface platform that removed the guns from the engine surface, this way it would not become a hazard if the the munitions were hit and started to explode in the magazines!

Your in a hostile environment (SPACE) and you put potentially destructive munitions on the surface of the engine housing that's a fighter or enemy vessel can potentially hit and detonate the munitions inside?

Like my aunt who is the refit adviser (a NAVY CAPTAIN) at GREAT LAKES BASE says "Great Story" poor vessel (nice 3D model though) designing but nice try!

Infinity heres some helpful advise I received when she saw the ship!
1) Platforms on your engines, as stated earlier to prevent exploding ordnance, should a vessel or fighter get a lucky strike in!

2) As I stated on an earlier post LINE of site for 360^ coverage with at least 20% of your "total fire power" and it looks like you got that right now!

3) it not the damage done generally that destroys the ship but it's lack of protection of ordnance magazines, More ships have been destroyed in combat from detonations of ordnance from inside the vessel then from "Hard Surface Strikes" her word not mine!

4) BUNT FORCE TRAUMA , during WW2 when IOWA class BATTLE SHIP was being designed and the idea was to be able to deliver enough damage to cause termination of the enemy force!
In short 10 volleys could do the job but why not deliver the fatal blow on your first volley!

Nothing personal folks just a little nit picking but as my aunt say it's the Nit picking that get perfection!

I hope that helps, and if you think that was bad you should here what the woman has to say about the GALATICA & Pegasus designs she can't even watch the show because of the poor engineering designs!
And LORD help you if she ever gets started on STAR TREK SHIPS!

She quite literally took the ship apart explaining what was wrong with the design, and I would not have mined but it DURING THE SHOW AAaaahhhhh!

there's an easy way to help deal with ordinance that's cooking off (a naval term, I believe).
with alot of the refits and customs I've been working in 2D Pixel art, I've been installing blast plating, meant to be blown outward, to help vent the resultant overpressure.

I got the idea from the magazine stores on the M1A1 abrams main battle tank, they use a very similar system for the ammo stores.

in the event an enemy round causes the ammo to cook off, the blast plates are blown out, hopefully giving full vent to the explosion, while protecting the tank's crew from harm.

it's a proven system too.

Sorry Xraider but it's an army term and can not applies to a breach explosion or magazine munitions! on a vessel because once detonation begins it not stopping till all fuel for it is consumed and on a ship in a confined space once oxygen get to the stores you really have a problem!

Any plans on doing the Terran Alliance battlecruisers?

If you do...it would be really nice to see some renders of Prometheus in combat with a couple of those battlecruisers...it would be a good illustration for the stories.

Any idea what the Ares will look like? This is the Ghost ship that appears towards the end of what has been published so far in the story.

Hi all, I know it has been a awhile but I have been hard at work on Episode # 9. This is the prelude to the season finale of BSP and it is a DOOSEY! I just finished it last night and it is 50 frakkin pages!!! This one details the fall of the colonies as seen through the eyes of the people aboard the Battlestar Atlantia, the second (and ultimately last) Nova class Battlestar. I am sending it to the editor today and hope to have it published soon.

I realy appreciate all the nice coments about the Barge and the story. Darkone, I am sorry if you don't like the Barge but I happen to love her and Infinity's render still leaves me drooling. I am desperately hoping he will do another for me. I have this great idea of looking down the left side of the ship as she blasts the hell out of a Cylon Basestar in front of her.

New Episodes are coming soon so stay tuned! Oh, and there will be a bit of a crossover from XRaider's story to mine and vice versa.

Hi, this is my first comment here. I enjoyed reading your feedback from your aunt! She had some very good points about design. Also the note about ship losses from magazine hits is very realistic, whether the impact was to the magazine itself or ignited from fires.

There are also waterline and below waterline hits that spelled doom as a ship rapidly took on water even without hitting ammo or fuel stores. To help with that I would expect compartmentalization to be even more important aboard spacecraft, especially warships and it seems to be evident in many epsiodes with several pressure doors about the interior of Galactica.

Also hits to the bridge can be quite devastating reducing the offensive capabilities of a ship while most of it is still operational. Some battles in Leyte Gulf resulted in ships taken out from bridge hits. The Galactica's CIC (which appears more akin to a submarine control room with combined operations and combat stations) appears to be possibly more internal and hardened versus an exposed upper superstructure like on a modern day warship. Provided sea going ships typically have a similar CIC that is not directly exposed, its purpose is more specialized versus supporting all operations.

Sea going ships depend on a rudder for steering and some have thrusters, but larger ships depend on the rudders for main maneuvering. Ships in BSG utilize various emplacements of RCS thrusters and may have several to boot that could assist each other when damaged, providing more redundancy than a rudder assembly.

As for the percentage of guns bearing from the rear, I would think that is dependant on the expected use of the ship. In space, the engagement ranges would be much larger so expectations might be that ships would typically only engage facing the enemy and if they need to leave the battle they would jump away provided the FTL was working. Sea going ships would need to steer away and expose their aft quarter in the process.

The ships could also spin about their axis to bring weapons to bear as needed while still maintaining their desired vector, definitely not possible with sea going vessels. I am truly happy with the presentation of flight this way with realistic physics...love it!

Of course, this is all sci-fi anyways, but it is fun to look at it from a realistic design perspective. I too consult with friends with military experience when designing stuff from time to time...you can surprised at what you can learn! You could even do a reverse analysis when compared to space combat as to how current ship designs have limitations. A lot of sci-fi has helped inspire designers.

I think the BSG folks did a wonderful job in many ways, but would not expect everything to make sense...the jump drive and anti-gravity plating are more or less the big fictional components, but they made it all work rather spectacularly together.
