they're a mixture of layer styles - they started out as a blurring of the ships, with bright drop shadow and external glow effects, then i started throwing various filters at it... can't remember the exact process, used lots of stretched out grain and glowing edges and things. also did some handpainting in places, but that was also heavily processed. the contrails and engine flares are pretty much entirely handpainted though.
