How do you make Shields???

Does anybody have a good way of making shields and then animating them? (3DS Max, Maya, or Viz) Thanks!

Pretty much anything that is obvious a shield- perhaps something similar to Star Trek?

I'm going to be animating a phaser hitting the shield and need shield effect.
