Confused I need help with raytracing

Hello everyone!!

I have been doing 3d graphics going on since I was 15 yrs old and now am 28
and there is onething I yet to figure out and that is visual effects. I am
in desperate need of figuring out raytracing. In short, I have an idea for a new starship, and I want the aztec panels to glw whenthe light hits it just to give it that "pop" to make it look authentically real. I know it has to do with raytracing, I just for the life of me cant figure it out and it has been making me nutz! You guys being the experts, I figured I would ask the pro's because I need to know. More specifically for truespace. I use truespace 5.5 for everything. Please help!! This is the missing piece to my creation. I tried texture bump maps but that just makes it bulky and cut in, not smooth with just the hint of panels.

Have you tried using spec (specularity) maps?

Twin, It's not ray-tracing, but texturing that you are looking for. You should read through the texturing tutorials here and on other sites because that is what you are looking for.

As for TS and good texturing..... it's limited and will give you results that are simply not up what you are aiming at. TS lacks in this department and can not deliver the "pop" without extensive post work.

Sometimes the worst opponent is the one closest, yet ignorant of the truth.

Spec maps define the intensity of reflected light from highlights on a surface. Check this out for more information (or read your manual... )

unofficial speed modelling challenge #1 - Communication devices

My random WIP thread which includes some hints and tips on modelling which _may_ be useful for the link above...!

It sucks because I cant do anything as far as v-rays or specular maps in TS5
So I cant make any models that look as good as the models you guys can in Lightwave
and 3ds. It makes me mad that they want you spend a lot of money to get a bull**** plugin to make it possible with limited results. That should be standard if you spend $600.00 on a program. So much for truespace 5 being a "Reality designer" Any ideas on alternatives?
