| Selling models on Turbosquid Hi, I don't post much here, but I was looking at Turbosquid recently and I noticed several Star Wars models for sale. Now I thought selling models of licenced protected stuff like that was illegal. Is that the case ? |

| Administrator | I believe so. I do not profess to know the exact legal rules on this. But it is my belief that you can not sell copyrighted materials (such as star wars models) online through sites like turbosquid. That said, it's possible TS doesn't know the files are on there site, nor has LucasFilms found them or contact TS about their removal. |

| if it's illegal, TS knows it. how can they ignore if its legal or not AND still selling it. TS is a big thing and they wouldnt take the risk. the same way, you couldnt model the enterprise because its copyrighted. and even if they really are copyrighted and its illegal and so on, who will complains ? ryan church ? that guy has other things to do |

| As long as the models are the sellers own creations i'm perfectly fine with that. The film companies don't need those few bucks. However i'm pretty sure that many of the meshes sold at TS are actually stolen meshes or meshes downloaded elsewhere for free. THAT is something you can get upset about! Regards Roman |

| Copyright law would be cool if it was like that. If you build a Star Destroyer on your own, you should be allowed to sell it or whatever you want to do with it, that's my opinion. Everyone knows it's not the model used in the movie, you ain't claiming you did the design, etc... you ain't counterfeiting Mona Lisa and passing it off as your own, you are just selling "reproductions". And you did the work building it, no matter if someone else came up with the design or not. Folks who download models for free and sell them, passing them off as their own at the same time, on the other hand, should be forced to drink their own blood. |

![]() I read just the other day that George Lucas is suing the man who designed and built the original 27 stormtrooper helmets for Star Wars IV: A New Hope when he found out he was now producing more of them from the original mold that he retained posession of and selling them to fans. No matter that the man designed them, built them and still had the original mold...Lucas now owns the copyright on them and that's that!

Because the guy design the Stormtrooper suit and built them, and still holds/ owns the original moulds for the Helmet. He has been given the right to mass produce them as he see fit ands sell them to fans. Though Lucas holds the copyrights to Star Wars, he is not able to dictate how many helmets are made, as he does not own the moulds. He can only stop them being used for anything other than what they are. If I remember correctly the guy that owns the mould was to pay Lucas a very small % of what he makes form each sales of the helmets. This was all done in a British. If Lucas is taking him to Court again a guess it a US court. But don’t know if it would hold as the helmets where designs and built in the UK, and fall under UK copyright laws.
