Max Need Max help

Hey all,

I recently got a job at a game company and I need to learn max, the one program I have the least experience in. Haven't used it since version 2! lol

Could anyone point me in the direction of some good books or web sites to help get me up to speed quickly? I know this is a fairly max heavy forum so i thought i would try here first.

Thanks

Wont they show you how to use it at your job?

Which version of Max does the studio use? There are a lot of differences between certain versions... If you are game modeling though you should check out the new (well, new since v2) Edit Poly modifier as it has lots of nice tools and you should definitely check out Unwrap UVW as it's a hell of a lot more powerful than what v2 had to offer

I came up with a primer for Max low poly modeling, though it could do with a refresh and is pretty basic. You can find it here:

'biotech' is correct.

Although if they want you to do things on your own a bit and get familiar with the program, check out the tutorials that came with it.
They are very useful, and the basics will help you grasp most of the aspects without trouble.

We are who we choose to be and make art that defines us, but there are numerous aspects of our individuality we are born with and are an integral part of what makes us human.

Check out Ben Mathis - Freelance Artist. I think the tutorials will be very helpful in your specific case.

You could also try hanging out at game art specific forums for pointers.

What was your tool of choice before getting a job in a max house? What kind of job is it?

The "best" game art forum right now is probably GameArtisans.org though polycount is still going strong. 3DTotal is getting more respect from winning the Dominance War two years in a row, but there aren't that many who regularly contribute to the 3DT low poly forums

I'm a lightwave guy. I was hired on as an effects artist. I don't think they would of hired me if they wernt willing to train me, however I want to learn on my own to get up to speed as fast as i can.

Also I'm coming from TV/Film to games so its going to be an interesting ride to say the least.

Deconstructing the Elements is an excellent book to have, even if you aren't a max user. I guess you may want a 3ds max bible/essentials/something or another to teach you the user interface.
