It honestly is the studio model, I got this image of the interweb so it's not that clear but I have the same picture but bigger in my 'Art of Star Trek' book, anyway it's up to you. There is a few more refrence picture here at Earth Spacedock - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki. Is the model for your Title Sequence animation?

I've never seen the pic you have but I have pics of the studio model and hal has the right pics.

I believe the one we see here isn't the studio model. It's the study model "proof of concept" , which is much smaller.

smoothness

Don't worry about smoothing right now, you can always handle it later after you have been modeling for a while. When you have an area like that you can select the polys you want smoothed differently and detach them from the mesh as a seperate mesh. You can then smooth that mew mesh, reset and collapse it and re attach it to the mesh it came from. Doing that produces verts for the edges of that separated mesh so the smoothing will work correctly. Just remember not to re smoothe the entire mesh after doing that trick because it will mess it up again. Eventually you will notice that different parts of the mesh end up using different smoothing groups.

The main problem with this station is that it's design is super simple but it's scale suggests it is something that should be detailed and grreebled to death.

It's the not the studio model, I could tell without even looking at the book because it has details never seen on the station model and the paint job is completely wrong, regardless of lighting. Having checked the book, it's part of three concept models and that image has the tiny Enterprise model, used for scale, removed. What it is is the model that the final Space Dock was based on.

Here's the unedited image and counterparts, the final link is to the page that links to them.

Look for smoothing groups it should show up when polygon mode is selected (if your using editable poly) Just set the group to a diffrent set than the surrounding mesh. IE select the faces you want then setthem to another group. You could also chamfer and edgeloop that area to tighten in the angle. Depends how dence youll want the mesh in the end.

I think most people new what I ment! It's made by the same people that made the large model, obviously it's got a different paint job and no fiber obtics and is a hell of a lot smaller! But as an offical production piece, it helped me show the underside to tiberiusjojo with a bit more credability.

Here's a site which has screengrabs from all the movies.
Kinofilme

Here are two pictures of the spacedock. Regarding the undersite, the second pictures should clearify a lot.
http://www.st-bilder.de/datein/bilde...KINO_3_041.jpg
http://www.st-bilder.de/datein/bilde...KINO_3_100.jpg

and a couple of pictures with my model of the starbase - maybe not 100% correct, but pretty close.
http://www.thelightworks.de/images/p...leet2_wall.jpg
http://www.thelightworks.de/images/p...leet3_wall.jpg
http://www.thelightworks.de/images/p...avelledFar.jpg

You can build it with very little detail for wider shots, but on the other hand you can go nuts on detail if you want to get very close (like flying inside the hangars).

Hope those will be helpful.

Tobias
