I'd go the 2nd image. But they are pretty similar.

Looking forward to seeing her spin!

I am also interested to hear what you'd like to see that MAX isn't capable of Tobian.

Second one again, and maybe crank it up again!

Don't want to get into an App War Comco. What I should have said is that Scanline is a crappy renderer. If you have a computing degree you can get amazing results from Mental Ray, and Vray is an astonishing quality renderer, if not included with Max. Surfacing is also a bit bleh in Max, they seriously need to upgrade that to something nodal, I know there are mix-materials and work arounds, but one texture per channel Puleaze!!!

Visit my Endless Pluto Station project, I'm still working on it, honest!

scanline is ok for stills, but it sucks if it comes to animations... i didn't test surfacing in lw yet, but maya is way ahead of max there, but you can still get the same results with max materials... it's just a bit more fiddly

I might have come across as a little more...defensive than I actually was with that question mate. Believe me, I have no intention of starting an app war...

Scanline is certainly lacking in a number of areas. I love FinalRender. It gives some great results. As for a different way of surfacing...MAX is all I've ever used so it's hard for me to say whether it's better or worse than anything else.

Psycho - I agree with Tobian...Number 2, and crack the contrast on your spec maps up a bit.

I personally think the maps look fine, quite subtle in the renders, but you can see they look OK with what you just uploaded

the dirt streaks look a bit fake because they're too sparse, when that shuttle picks up dirt it's not going to have one streak of dirt every few square feet - it'll have faint streaks all over

btw what is the anisotropy map for, I don't think we have anything like that in LW, is it like the gloss setting?

I pity the fool!

k, so i'm gonna make new streaks... thanx for the tip

with anisotropy, you don't get a round specular highlight, but an elliptic one. you can control, how elliptical it is and also its orientation with maps. i only use the maps for the orientation, so for example on white parts the ellipse is at 0°, on light grey parts it's rotated by 90° and so on... hope this was undestandable

edit: btw, should the streaks start on the gridlines, as it is now, or should they really be everywhere?
and do you think, i should make the color map less subtile? i mean, i don't really want it to stick out, but maybe its a bit TOO subtile atm...
