You mean the tau'ri, and yeah it's designed to be within a year or 2 of the events of "Unending."

And to say how long I've spent on it is difficult to say to be honest. I first started the model in June but I spent quite a time away from modelling between then and now, not to mention starting other models such as my Titan battleship. But this is the first model where I've tried modelling the panels which I spent a bit of time experimenting with that as well, so yeah I expect overall I've spent a fair amount of time on it.

Just out of interst Scop, what technique do you use to create the plates?

I usually grind to a halt when i need to plate up my ships (not really sure what to do, and maybe just plan lazy ), so any advice would be fab!

well i wasnt far off tau'ri hehe and its a shame how the series ended its just so un climatic and **** and for something thats gone on for years just a big let down but the whole technology thing that they left us with gave me and i guess a lot of other people ideas how future ships would look and your one is def what i would expect.

Yeah I agree, and I'm glad you like it. In principle I kinda disagree with the way we got the technology, it was incredibly rushed. We hardly saw the Asgard over the last few seasons then suddenly we're getting all of their technology. But on the other hand, it's a great base for us designers to work off and think how ships would look once the 2 aesthetics are kinda melded together. As we went on I'd imagine the Tau'ri ships to get a few more curves into them but I suck at actually making curves so I've not bothered with anything like that yet lol.

Well I selected the faces that I wanted to add panels to then used the slice plane to cut squares into it/them. Then I selected a group of the cut faces and bevelled them a little bit, then extruded. There are probably a million and one better ways to do it but that's just how I ended up doing it and I was fairly pleased with the results. In the past I've tried just created boxes in various places but I found this a lot easier.

I'll have a look into it tomorrow, certainly sounds like a nice idea.

And here we go, first attempt at proper final renders with one my my ships. Hope you enjoy!

the render looks really good.

Although one small nitpick, is that the lighting of the 'bright' planet, doesnt match the rather dullish dark not as much 'sun' as the planet is receiving.

now you could argue that its a non-reflective radarish material, but those type have very soft specular even displaced light surfaces like 'cloth' would.

other than that small nitpick (for i have yet to do a good scene render myself) it looks fantastic

Well it's really because of the quite frankly shoddy texturing job. The problem is as soon as I turn the lighting up on the ship it washes out the details and make it look incredibly bland. I might try decreasing the brightness of the planet and see if that helps it.

EDIT: Ok I tried adjusting the colour balance and the brightness in Photoshop and I think it's improved it but others may disagree!

Not sure about the darkened version. especially since you lose the planets atmosphere! Scop, are you trying to kill us!!

If you decide to re-render the scence, maybe add less powerful lights nearer the ships, to light the shadows a bit more. Also, don;t forget to put some spotlights around the hanger bay. would be preatty tricky to land there atm just my 2 cents
