nice Project man. love the idea of the geodesic sphere. you might get a better look if it was made with pipes then square metal doh.

When you love a pet, loosing it is like loosing a part of your soul. I lost part of mine on Feb 12 2008. Never will it be the same again.

Looks neat. Did not quite understand the pros and cons for either sphere faces layout. Personally I prefer the geodesic one, since you will not polar issues and from a stress (engineering point) I think equal elements are to prefer.

Keep up the good job !

Why would you go with tesselated? If I did a quad dome, I could add a frame support for the dome alot easier because of the straight lines. With the Tess dome, adding the frame work is going to be a lot harder, if I even add it at all. Tho the fram structure would help with the scale issue . .
what do you think?

I was thinking about this looking at the Earth-Mars transporter. The fuel cells on that are geodesic but have repeating greebles on them. I was wondering how to do that quickly, since aligning each piece of additional frame work to every single edge of the sphere would be crazy...

Well my limited knowledge tells me that tesselate dis stronger anyway so you probably wouldn't need as mu ch of a frame(assuming we are talking about the same thing here) and there's also the fact that everyone does quad domes. They are.....well, boring. Tesselated ones are rarer and more intersting, and make for a better looking scene. On the other hand they tend to look chopped off(where it hits the ground) and I personally prefer my domes slightly squashed which may be harder to do with the tesselated style.

You could go for the hex(or is it octo?) style of the Eden Project.

It's hexagonal, but I don't think LW has a tool to build one for you automatically... It should be noted that tesselated hexagons would make a flat surface so they're obviously very distorted.

Hi Dallidas, this is an image of a quad dome . . . .

The only reason I could think of for using this particular type of dome is to add the detail needed for perspective, by way of framework to support the dome. Because the quads are simple in structure it would be easy to add framing . . in short order.

Cool idea but I think it would take me forever to build the framework in tube shape then add the glass in. My version of LW is limited to the amount of cool plug-ins everyone else has so design like that would take a long long time, unless you know of a shortcut.
The idea I got for the frame work came from here:

I thought it looks pretty cool.

I think it boils down to the framework if I wanted to add it.
The Quad dome would be really easy but the Tesselated version as Armondikov put it would be crazy to plot each edge.

@ The B5 Fan . . . the idea of the Hex dome is sick . . .
the link Armondikov posted is far out . . . I think I like that . . . .

You can do some complex bevelling and then limit the amount of extra detail you model into it. To make some kind of hub between them you can start with the same tesselated sphere and use the points as a base, not sure where to go from there, could be worth experimenting with.

Cool concept dude, its inspiring me.

As for the dome, its cool, but theres a bit I don't like about, and thats the base. I personally prefer to have a small wall or some sort of visible foundation beneath it. Or something. I hope you get what I mean... or I could always post a picture...
