Oops looks like I falsely assumed Max and LW use the same way of creating a geodesic sphere...seems like you'd need to use even numbers, because the exact same thing happens in max if you use even numbers...why is everything vice versa?
I think the tesselated dome (the one made of triangles, right?) would be better from an engineering point though as it has no special weak points or parts that are under heavy strain all the time.

Nice work so far! I was wondering how you guys built these kinds of domes/spheres. I figured there might be some special tools in your program to make it easier (like a geometric solids generator).

I built a 12-frequency, 3/8 geodesic dome from scratch for my Valley Forge project. You can check it out in the 3D WIP section.

I'm using an old version of Rhino and had to make one with splines. After some research, I couldn't find much in the way of tutorials on how to design a geodesic dome. I finally figured it out though and managed to map out all the triangles onto a sphere using projection from an underlying icosahedron. Whew! What a chore that was. But at least now I know how to do it. . .

at least on a tessellation sphere with 3 segments.

I managed it with what's marked as 6 segments. If you choose even numbers you get a straight horizontal line that you can use as the base of the dome, odd numbers of segments are slightly curved. It seems like only 6 segments so far produce a "perfect" pattern, all the other settings leave you with spare triangles. I still haven't tried all the possible segments.

To make the inner triangles, I just stenciled the original object back onto the inner most polygons after bevelling. I didn't try using the smart shift (can't remember what it's called at the moment), but with some thought it's definitely possible and fairly easy. There may be some more advanced options to manage your edges while constructing something like this but it'll not be anything I've used.

You know I often wonder about that too. I was trying to learn Max a month ago or so. It was way too reistrictive for me. Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent tools in Max, example you got to your dome a lot easier than I did. I just don't like all the protocol used in Max to build objects. Anyway that is another thread I started . . .

Thanks . . you now there are some Geometry tool in LW but I never spent the time to use any of them as of yet . . maybe I should go in there now and see what the deal is. . . funny I have been using LW since 2000 and never used any of the Parametric tools or Quadric or platonic solid tools.

I will bounce over now and check out that wip . . .
I can imagine how long it took to build that dome like that . . this is one of the reasons why I am trying hard not to stray too far from what I actually need for this dome because there is a lot of realestate to cover if I try to add detail and frame work and build in all the nooks and crannies.

Dude that really looks steller, but why are some of the hex's out of square? They look a little crooked, almost like they were drining . . .

I know exactly what you are talking about. Domes have been a common thread in some of my projects as of late. yeah, it's kind of stupid to have the dome resting on the ground. one dome I build was being generated by a series of energy genies that skirted the circumference . . . .
But yes something to support the dome is always good . . .
here is an example from my last project:

maybe for this dome I will come up with something a bit different for supporting the dome.

Just wanted to say that I really love how this dome is looking, very cool detailing and I really like the texturing so far!

You can do it with 3 segments just about, Even tho theres no middle line. but then I'd just go & use the knife tool to sort that bit out .

you know that building with the spires was for another project . . .
I finished it a few weeks ago. I never did a final render on it beause it was for a fanfilm project. I will post links when the film comes out.

you know, I saw that you said it was for your 'last project' but I guess that didn't sink in! hahaha... Please do post some links to that project, it looks amazing!
