Occupation: Thor's Settlement

Hello everyone,
last week I started thinking of starting a new project, I had no idea of what to do. Spaceship, Airplane, or maybe a new scene. There is so much inspiration around here that it is hard to choose from.
Anyway, I saw an image of something that reminded me of a project I had done almost 4 years ago. It was an environmental dome city which I called the "Morse Settlement." The idea was that this settlement would be taken over by an alien race and the theme for the project was called "The Occupation".
I decided because of the image I saw to redo this environment and give it a new name. I really wasn't happy with the modeling I had done with the old project so seeing how my skillset has improved a bit . . I am going to give this another try.

This is am image of the old scene I did . . . it took about 5 months to build.
The only thing missing here is the dome which I decided to ommit in the final renders.

The revision for this project is going to be so much bigger I am actually looking forward to starting . . Already from the image below, the landscap and the dome are 2x as large as the original. . wish me luck SFM

Thanks JeffreySG,
I was going over some of the measurements just now. The diameter of the dome is 3,800ft and 1,900 feet high . . . very big. The area inside is massive.
I am thinking of constructing 3 levels as the old version has only 2.

Dude this is going to be outta control . . . I have to build an array of objects which covers the gambit of poly details . . . maybe I will make those objects different threads . . like low poly vehicles and the like.

Anyway, glad you are on board . . .

Thanks Aresius,
I want to see if I could do it better this time . . . .

I've been going over the layout of the ground level of the dome. you can't tell much from this image but the circles, Squares and such are structure positions, which are placed on top of a land mass plate, sort of like the ground plate in SGA.
I have been jotting down notes and scribbling images trying to sus out the look and feel of this place. I think it is going to be pretty rad.

Thanks B5 Fan, I am hoping it does as well . . .

I did some more work on the entire project layout this week. I started to do sketches of the buildings that would go into all 3 levels of the dome. But before really got heavy into that, I finished the concept layout for the ground level and built the outline of the Dome structure.

This is a finished plot for the ground level . . . as before all the circles and geo shapes are building placements.

The first thing I put together was the ground plate that would support the buildings and get them off the ground.

The dome is done for the most part but I may still change my mind as from being a Tessellated dome to a regular quad poly dome. This is what I came up with for a tessellated version.

This is for much later but I was getting a jump start on a highway system that would get traffic from the ground level to the second level.
The dome is 1900 ft high so I thought first two levels should be 600 ft and the last level would take up the difference.
The roadways leading from level 1 to level 2 would skirt along the inside perimeter of the dome. The initial decent would be 400ft for a distance of about 2900ft this would give me a slop of around 13 degrees which is fairly decent but then I would be left with a 200ft drop with only 800ft to do it in . . . that would suck. so I decided to curve the roadway around the 4 round structures almost in the center of the plate which is almost 2000ft of extra distance. . . the paths are in color . . .
Anyway this is something for a later date . . . here's the image, sorry to babble

I'd go for the tesselated dome over the quad sphere any day. Though to give it the sense of scale your talking about you'll need to make your eyeballs bleed with greebles... good luck with that.

eyeballs bleed . . . .
I know I was thinking about that yesturday . . . . Question tho'
Why would you go with tesselated? If I did a quad dome, I could add a frame support for the dome alot easier because of the straight lines. With the Tess dome, adding the frame work is going to be a lot harder, if I even add it at all. Tho the fram structure would help with the scale issue . .
what do you think?
