Can't help it. While the modelling is cool, I still think that the ripped design itself is ugly and a rather stupid idea. Only explanation is a stripped down vessel without armor. I can't quite follow those attempts at interpreting some tactical value into that design either. Ribs offer zero protection in the main direction of incoming fire and gaps in the armor just cry "kill me here!".

And if there was any reason or advantage to it - why is the more modern BS Pegasus fully covered in armor plates like any other warship, be it real or SF?

Larsen nailed it right on the head. Same basic concept I'm going with. Mine has a bit more armor than the galactica, and it's thicker but still keeping the ribbing in mind. Here's a concept for the Body.

Because the Pegasus requires it. It has nearly zero real Point Defense. It's made to withstand longer duration direct front lines attacks. The thing took 2 nuclear impacts in "Downloaded" and still was able to fight like nothing happend. Major damage was to the drive section which was the focal point of the cylon attack. Showing that alone that the drive section can take that much damage says alot.

Ribbing is a very good tactical procedure against small and flak munitions, requiring an enemy target to broadside the ship in order to get any hope of armor penetration (as firing into the ribs won't actually damage the hull because of the 90 degree difference.) Almost all of Galactica's weapons can fire to the sides, which makes perfect sense. Nukes probably weren't used in this era for one reason or another, perhaps problems with deployment and nuclear payloads, but it's true that this kind of defense isn't 100% (then again, nothing is.)

Now, if ships like the Pegasus had this ribbing underneath their armor, then that makes perfect sense, as having a layer of nothing between the ordinance and the hull offers dissipation room for the blast. The Pegasus model isn't designed this way perse, but that's an explanation.

The body is looking great so far, keep it up!

Another fact about the Galactica that isn't so obvious from the shots the tv show gives is that the entire ship is covered in armour but its beneath the rib level. Like Larsen said the top layer would serve as extra protection for sensitive areas, because an entire second layer would have been unpractical.

Really, really, looking forward to more!
