| Following their latest TV appearance last month I decided to have a play with the UK's favourite alien-mutant in a can. Dalek purists may wish to band together and visit their local branch of Vengeful Mobs'R'Us for a large economy pack of pitchforks and flaming torches. I'm not attempting to faithfully reproduce any of the original designs, I'm just seeing what I can do with the general concept. I've been working on this project all week and here is the progress so far. dalek-wip00.jpg - Overview and forum thumbnail. I've aimed for a smoother look to the travel machine, getting rid of the sharp edges on the lower body to give it more of a moulded or cast appearance. I also got rid of the sink plunger on the arm, my Daleks don't do their own plumbing, they enslave someone else to do it for them. dalek-wip01.jpg - The head. This version is strongly influenced by the new style Dalek head. dalek-wip02.jpg - The ear/speech lamp. I've gone with the classic TV style but will at some point produce a new/movie style lamp as well. My yellow Dalek is a combat spearhead model, a first in assault trooper he doesn't need a manipulator arm as much as he needs a second gun. dalek-wip03.jpg - The eye stalk. I abandoned the traditional single axis joint in favour of a ball and socket. The inner surface (retina?) of the eye pod has a material which is 100% reflective and and has 50% pale blue/white luminance, seen through the glass lens it gives a nice effect to the eye. |

| dalek-wip04.jpg - Shoulders and chest. I'm not entirely happy with the plates around the shoulders and may redo them, this version of the neck has a fully modeled grill. I got rid of the horrible square, boxy arm sockets as they look bad on the real thing and even worse on CG Daleks and went with something that fit in with the overal theme of smoothness. This red Dalek is my base model, the first one I built, all the other variations you see in this thread evolved from this one. dalek-wip05.jpg - Shoulders and chest. The earlier style seen on the first TV Daleks, the neck grill on this one is solid with an alpha mapped texture for the mesh. Also here is the other style of head which combines the ball joint with a single axis pivot to give quite a good range of movement. This Dalek also has a more traditional "shoe" without the fancy lower edge. dalek-wip06.jpg - The arms. They say that mankind owes much of his development to the evolution of the opposable thumb, as I've never heard of an opposable sink plunger I came up with a fancy manipulator hand for my Daleks. dalek-wip07.jpg - The skirts. I currently have about 6 different versions of the skirt with vents and access panels located in different places. The next version I will be working on is the special weapons or "gunner" Dalek, as well as continued tweaking of the existing models. |
