hehe cheers Ozylot. Hopefully I can get it integrated into the actual object soon, and render it in under 8 years

Visit my Endless Pluto Station project, I'm still working on it, honest!

Could you show what the 'rapidly oscillating' shape looks like without the glass tube? Cause it looks really cool and I'd try anything to recreate it in max

Meow! Herding cats indeed! Looks great.

No trees were harmed in the production of this message. However, several billion electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

The new version looks better.

I don't know if I understood what you said: "if you can make heads or tails of it"

Cheers guys!

'make heads or tails of' is an English expression, basically meaning 'comprehend' in the context that something is very complicated

Ok here's the full render inside the glass, and without glass (which renders much faster hehe)

It goes a little funky where it overlaps, but in position you won't see it. I'll try and get a shot of that rendered when I can - they are slow to render

The process is down to an old hack technique, you can read on here http://www.mohhs.com/lw/pdf/Lasers.PDF is the basic idea, but I have used a fully 3d procedural texture so as the object motion blurs through the scene, it paints on a 3d plasma. LW 9.3.1 has superb realistic motion blur so it's much improved over the old versions

Looks good. I notice the problem on the joints on your earlier render, but though it was the glass distorting it. you could always put some sort of cover over it to hid that.
