Cheers Freak. If you look at where the joints are http://comby.star-fleet.org/test120a.jpg it won't show at all, so it's not a problem

Visit my Endless Pluto Station project, I'm still working on it, honest!

Nice plasma! I can understand that it makes your CPU melt

I intend to, but it's going to take a lot of fiddling to get it to work properly in the scenes. I have to fix the radiosity and lighting to work with it too!

m-Hmm. So you basically have rotating planes with a texture, like in the tutorial, butt he difference is that: You use a 3d procedural, and as the planes rotate the part of the procedural they display changes? And you use motion blur to "capture" the previous color information of the planes?

Pretty much yes, however in my case I made the object a tube shape and used an endomorph to shrink it's size so it went from a fat tube to a near 0 point tube: That way I can morph the whole set of plasma objects together, as they all have the same endomorph data. So I just set their morph state to 1 on frame 1 and set their pre and post behaviour to 'repeat' which creates an infinite 'vibration' loop, which means they would look the same from one frame to the next, other than if I altered the procedurals, to create wanted movement It might not work on all renderers, depending how well they do motion blur.

Ah. So you're like, printing "slices" of the procedural with motion blur....who'd have thought of that! Volumetrics from 3D procedurals without any volumetrics...

It goes a little funky where it overlaps, but in position you won't see it. I'll try and get a shot of that rendered when I can - they are slow to render

The process is down to an old hack technique, you can read on here http://www.mohhs.com/lw/pdf/Lasers.PDF is the basic idea, but I have used a fully 3d procedural texture so as the object motion blurs through the scene, it paints on a 3d plasma. LW 9.3.1 has superb realistic motion blur so it's much improved over the old versions
very cool! and thanks for posting that PDF! I've been interested in this technique since I tried to use it for my locker room so the PDF will be a good read for me!
