okay, illustrated version:

first, you see that I've intruded the panel and added lines on the inner surfaces of the window, then selected ALL edges on the panel EXCEPT for those on the inner surfaces. Then I click move>normal. most of the edge simply move "down," preserving the geometry of the panel, but those around the window outline move "in" and "down," creating results like a bevel would but with better geometry (edges would normally have weird angles instead of the more-or-less right angles we have this way).

then, take the outlines and harden them. the last pic is the same thing using the shaded view in Wings.

hope that clears up WTH I was talking about

Wink

I ask for geltin and I get pudding!

I'll just take your word for it. But you should merge the nearby edges together & avoid having 3 vert faces on your window edges.

In Silo:
-cut out window
-clean up geometry, if needed
-shell
-loop select faces, extrude, inset

or

-loop select edges, bevel

sorry, I thought that's what you were asking about. Which part did you want me to explain? And yes, I will clean up the n-gons and small tris.

In Silo, what does "shell" do?

A 'Shell' tool normally gives a selected object thickness. It's just a convenience tool.

ok, that's what "intrude" is used for in Wings.

and if there was something else you were wondering about with what I'm doing, please let me know, I'll do my best to explain. I appreciate the help.

well, did some more work on the interior, just to take a break from those panels. The captain's cabin is basically done, still needs some final touches, but almost there. I may make the bathroom smaller to give the bedroom more space.

SURPRISE! I've known I could put pictures into Wings for ages, but back when I rendered with TrueSpace 3.1 the bitmaps were lost during import. I decided to experiment and see if Kerky would render them, and Voilą! there now hangs in the Captain's cabin a stately painting (framed, no less) of the Calypso en route to dock with the Enterprise. I'm sure the artist is renowned throughout the Federation. I put Probert's painting in the VIP stateroom. fun!

Looks great!!

If you want, I can walk you through getting nicer soft shadows in kerky. Keep up the good work!

thanks Aresius.

Ozy - that'd be cool. For lighting, I've been using two omni lights: one above, a little off-center, multiplier=2, with soft shadows; the other from a 3/4 perspective and slightly below, multiplier=1 with soft shadows. All other light settings default. I just figured out last night how to widen the FOV on the camera, too.
