Yea, I didn't have any problem with exposure/contrast for the exterior shots. they were nice.
I'm using the settings "as is" except for:
ray tracing>render method: production AA
GI method: photon map+final gathering (SW)
material settings>ambient color: .5, diffuse color: .75, specular color: .25

thanks for the tips on the light settings

underside details. landing feet and boarding hatch/platform. as of now, no, you can't actually open the hatch and look up into the interior, but it's all lined up, so I may work it out later. next big thing, though, is the impulse engine, which will be centered between the feet. enjoy!

[edit]added close-up pic. sorry for the oversight [/edit]

man, glowey stuff really eats up render time... until now, everything took about a minute. the impulse glow took 15! -and then I accidentally saved it as a .gif. FNA... It must be time to sleep.

Yes, self illuminating materials will eat up your render time a lot. This is in part because each triangle in the mesh is acting as a single light. For that reason its very easy to get the number of lights up into the hundreds. One way to get around that is to create a single square that overlaps the mesh, and set that as your emitter. Another way that I did once was to hollow out the insides in wings. (Using bridge) and then place a very powerful omni light inside.

Looking good.

what settings did you use for the emitter (the model that has the light inside) and for the light itself? when I tried it, the light glows through everything.

If you are trying the omni light thing, then I would suggest that you make sure that the chamber where the light is inside, is sealed with openings only where you want the light to shine out. I can do a quick sketch if you like.

made a new emitter plate, octagonal instead of round, a lot less triangles and it renders fine. I couldn't get the omni light setup to work properly...
also, a test on the hull plating (final colors will match the D, just playing with the tones right now. anyone think I need a third color?
