| Well, I think I've got as far as I can without asking for help. I have no idea how to cut the windows into the hull. I saw the tutorial on using Shapemerge, but that seems to cause errors. If anyone has suggestions on how to model the windows cleanly, that would be of great help. If I can figure out how to model everything else I need, then I plan to make this a very detailed mesh. Where you can get very close to the hull. So the poly count will be a little bit high. ![]() |

| SFM Guru | Ah, lookin good. Just stencil them in and extrude them back, saving the original cut polys for the actual window glass. Just make sure you don't get double points if you happen to stencil right on top of an existing poly edge. Make sure your smoothing angle of your surface setting is not too high either, or you will end up with nasty smoothing errors. I'm a modo (and LightWave) guy, so I hope this info translates to 3dmax. deg |

| SFM Guru | Here's a LightWave tut with the principles anyway. Go to the tutorials link on the right side, the "Better Space" link, and scroll down... Or you can find the same one here, under the tutorials link. And here an interior one. deg |

| Thanks guys. Yeah, looking over those tutorials, that's pretty much the method I've been trying. I'll just have to be careful when applying them. I first tried it last night with the B/C deck superstructure. It caused errors. I'll give it another go. See, I'm learning as I go. Before I started this ship, I couldn't model anything that wasn't made up of geometric shapes like cubes, and cylinders and such. I think I've done pretty well considering that, and it would be an awful shame to stop now. I'll try to cut some windows into the saucer tonight after work. I just hope you guys can help guide me to the finish line if I have any more problems. |

| SFM Oracle | missed the window part check my tuts I got a basic cutting guide on my site. Tutorials The madFish Way! just in case it isnt in any of my sigs. Max has issues with "stenciling" in that it always leaves messy verts. IE verts that add nothing to the form of geometry. IE just sits on a straight line doing nothing but adding polycount and possible issues when extruding or anything else. Saucer windows should be fairly simple just avoid any getting too close to the saucers edges or youll end up with a odd shape in the curve of the saucer. Try making a cyl and connecting some of the edges close to the edges running it's length and youll see that geometricly it is still round but that edge added in close to another cause the smoothing to freak out and make a flat spot or bump the length of the cyl. It is always a balance this. But anyhoo since this is your first "real" model heh, you prolly have this under grasp by now. ;p MKF- |
