Surya Class

Hi gang! I've started on a Federation Surya class starship.

http://www.shipschematics.net/startr...gate_surya.jpg

My goal is two-fold: 1) see how fast and well I can model (I don't want this dragging on for months) and 2) generate a bunch of generic Franz Joseph parts for future kit-bashing (someone wants a destroyer). In some ways it's Boldly Going Where Vektor Has Gone Before. But hey, it's not another Connie! (What? Model a Galaxy? Have you lost your MIND?!?!)

It's fun finding out where FJ made mistakes with his plans (regarding their own consistency, not how well they duplicate the TV show). I haven't found a lot, but there are a couple. The one I'm talking about is on the aft drawing of the warp nacelle.

My biggest glitch at the moment is figuring out how to get the top "secondary" deck to merge with the saucer. It's not "just like the Reliant". Which may be where the errors come from. The shape is either not possible (as drawn) or I'm not seeing it right. If anyone has an aft or underside drawing of this ship (or photos of a physical model) that would be swell. Until I can get that sorted, I'll get back to the nacelles. (Which are SO much easier than the actual TOS model nacelles, btw.)

I'll get back to the drydock soon. I'm stretching my legs.

John Payne did a model of the Surya:
USS Illusive
USS Illusive
I'm pretty sure he built it from an available garage kit, but I don't know where he got it.

You're my new hero! It's interesting the way he did her up with a "Cage" motif. Very nice.

Bill,

Remind me to discuss TOS - TMP refits with you, we could get a factory going

I love watching you make TOS era ships - so as you can imagine I will be following this intently

Who is the more foolish - the fool, or the fool who follows them?

Well, I was hoping for a more graceful solution (one hull tapering nicely into the other). But by looking at Payne's model, it looks like brute force is called for (cutting one into the other, smoothing out the results).

Good Luck (tried that with limited success - but I bet you can pull it off )

Well, here's what I came up with. Some of the angles have been changed, but I think this was the artist's orginal intent. (Not sure if this one is aridas sofia's or Todd Guenther's.) Now to detailing!
