I swear that if I hadn't seen this thread and known different, I would have sworn that your shots were photos of a miniature. They look almost indistinguishable from the old movie shots.

very well done Sir!

Dude, you have the magic touch. I know after seeing your work in the past I shouldn't be surprised by this, but I am everytime. Very nice work!

Ok, I'm not asking for where to find the "Awesome 3D" button, but any tips on how you lit this?

Btw, just only slighty off topic, but i don't know the answer.

Is ILM still handling the CGI and special effects in the new trek movie?

Love the wallpapers! Great design. As for ILM doing the cgi, I believe so. Not 100% sure.

How did you get the metal plates in the hull to reflect? Is it just a raytrace material, or did you come up with a trick of some sort?

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody. I just needed a little break from my work on the Grandeur and working up some beauty shots for my modified Big E made for a nice diversion. For those of you who have asked about some front views, I have already moved on to other things for now but I'll see what I can do next time.

First, I'm doing all of my renders these days with Mental Ray, which has a lot to do with the lighting quality of these renders. Theres a bright, yellow-white key light and a dimmer, reddish fill light and that's it. There's no ambient illumination in the scene at all, which is more realistic for an airless environment. There is, however, a lot of interreflected light bouncing off various parts of the ship and onto others, which is something Mental Ray is quite good at. I'm also using exposure control, which gives the whole image better dynamic range.

I'm telling you guys, if you're not using Mental Ray, which is built into 3ds Max, you're missing out.
