I see alot of people using that sketchup these days, in some ways its good as it gives new people an easy way to doing 3D modeling

One thing I will say is you'll need a hatch of some sort for the coal bunker a decent size cargo door perhaps. Though it all depends on the level of detail you want to add

You bet! I have so much deck fittings to put in to make it come alive. Luckily I have a ton of great reference books for wooden ships and early 19/20th century iron clads. Ventilation, port holes, hatches and what not. I don't know if I will be able to come up with a satisfactory idea for stringing between the stanchions though.

not sure if you can do it in sketchup but for low poly modeling method is to do a flat plate that spreads across your area where your rope will be then apply a rope texture with an oppacity map. When you render just the rope will be in place, however its only 2D and doesnt work well when your moving about.

you could model a rope using the follow me tool in sketchup?
by the way when making complex models do you just make half of the ship/detail and then copy and paste it to the other side? if you dont you should start before you start adding all the details!

Whoa!!! How the heck did you do that liam887? I've used the follow me tool but it never has done anything like that for me! You have to tell me just what you did to make that knot. I also use TurboSketch and I don't remember seeing anything braided that some one didn't have to model every strand separately to get the look right. That texture is great too!

I'm humbled

Almost forgot to answer your question,

I've only done one model where I've created half and then mirrored the other half. I've never posted it though. Give me a few minutes and I'll find a pic of it and post.

i didn't do it but i have done it, this image is from a tutorial when I find it on my hard drive ill post it for you to use. My hard drives full of **** and random files its about 350GB of crap but ive just got back from London this morning and realized i need a new portfolio so im deleting and sorting things ill come across the tutorial eventually in the next couple of days. If you leave the ropes and concentrate on the rest of your model you can make them when i send you the tutorial!
its ok i dont need to see it i was just wondering if you used that technique?
