Off to bed in a minute but first here is a sectioned view of the MDS Iron Sun showing the transfer tunnel between bays and the small craft hangar.

looking good fella. With the greebled bit, do you reckon you'll be carrying that level of bits on the other surfaces? With the relatively simple basic structures you might find (depending on the software you're using) it better to go a bit homeworld-y and just paint some cool textures on the flat surfaces?

Thanks Dannage

I have more greeble bits to do but I also know that this models scale is too big to go that in depth with SketchUp. But I will try to do more than I have done so far. There are still a lot of large empty spaces. I don't know anything about applying textures (that is for another project I think). I am basically using SketchUp to get ideas down into some thing a little more solid (well, as solid as ones and zeros can be ) than the paper sketches and ideas in my head. I am enjoying the process a lot though

Anyone else around here know how to texcture in sketchup? Isn't someone uzsing Sketchup to make that galactica-ish model elsewhere in the WIP sections? It might even be that you can give it to someone else once built, to texture for you.

The reason I mention it is that you probably ended up creating a lot of Polys or verts for, essentially, some random boxes in the middle. This could cause 2 problems. First the level of detail here jars visually with the large flat areas rather than complimenting them, because it is such a significant contrast. You have ahuge flat piece with no detail whatsoever, and then you have a very busy section, where it might be better suited to the eye, if there was just a little bit to break up the lines in places.

Secondly, you may find that skethup, if it is a bit limited in how much detail it can handle, will not allow you to build some of your later prominent details. How much of a shame would you find it if the mesh couldn't cope with adding engines, for example, if you'd used all the juice up on the greebles.

It's not meant as a crit (Well, maybe, but a very constructive one I hope!) but I think you could do with leaving the random-box greebles until the end, as these could be dealt with nicely by textures, which we can come to the next time around. For now, I would focus on the pivotal points, such as engines, weapons, radar, etc. Basically, apply your must have modifications and leave the nice-to-fix for later...

That's just my opinion in anyu case, course, I don't claim to actually have any idea what I'm doing!!

Now, go post some juicy updates for us.

There is a galactica-ish model being done. I've actually pm'd the artist about certain sketchUp features. There are now a surprising amount of sketchup users posting their work here now. I think that he will be using Kerkythea to do everything but the modeling though I may be mistaken about how much he will do in sketchUp verses Kerkythea.

I understand where you are coming from and in one respect I agree with you however not all of those big, flat, plain expanses are going to remain so. I'm posting a picture that shows the beginnings of more detail on the sides of the ship. I want to put those "random" boxes in these spaces too.

Yeah it would suck but I wanted to see what my idea would look like. If I add the windows in to the "random" boxes it would look pretty good. But I will try doing the main stuff like engines, etc... before I get crazy

I'm all for this kind of critique I'm not getting too much done right now as work has me doing a lot of hair pulling and gnashing of teeth...can you hear the lamentations of the women?

I'll get more done in a few days.

Thanks

Got a bit done though I haven't had much time. I decided to put in a set of large arrays in and then modified them. More to do but I have a few pics showing what I did and then changed.

I would love to have more time

Thanks Dannage,

You're killing me Now I have to think up what the arrays are for! Probably passive sensor arrays... yeah...

I've done some more, added some more of the dreaded passive sensor arrays to the bottom, a new antenna farm under the "tail" that also has cooling vents behind them.

Worked on the main engines too.
