Max Consular-class space cruiser Interior WIP

Hello, This is my first post on these forums. I'm still fairly new to 3D modeling and new to the program that I am using, 3Ds Max. I decided to do this model due to the fact that it's a challenge, it can be used in cool character animations, and it's one of my favorite ships in the SW universe. Just to point out, in case some of you do not know, this is the same model as the Radiant VII shown in the beginning of Star Wars Episode 1, the Phantom Menace. So far I have only completed the deck plan imports and positioning, the Turbo lift construction, and started the construction of the cockpit deck. Attached are the images that i have so far. I currently do not have any mapped textures applied, and do not plan to do so except for the max architectural textures (ie. leather, carpet, etc.). The images attached do have some lighting problems, i only have the scene set up with omni lights at 0.75 illuminocity, and far atinuation activated. If anyone has any ideas on how to better set up the lighting to produce a better image, please let me know. Also just to point out, I do plan on modeling each of the 4 decks, and every room. Please post your opinion/advice and i will continue to update the thread as the modeling continues.

Welcome to the forum.

About the images: You need to smooth the lines of the turbolift doors (they look too edged). And the deck planets in the third image seem to have some errors either (There's light shining through between the planets borders, but in the images, these borders are shown having a black colour line).

So far, keep going. The interior of the whole Radiant class is something new here, I guess.

Thanks, The turbolift doors do have smoothing applied to them, I'm using the smooth modifier set to auto smooth, I can try playing around with that and see if I can reduce the edge hardness. As for the tiles, I do see what you're talking about, however i do not know what's causing it, there are no other lights active except the omni's in the ceiling. As for the black boarders, I'm not sure what you're referring to. When I said lighting problems in the OP, i meant more on the lines of the areas of high brightness on the walls, and the blurred light around the panels on the wall. Also by your last comment, does that mean that someone has tried this before?

I've highlighted the issues by circles.
These spots seem like some light coming through the plates from the decks below...

Keep going, you make it.

Here is an update on the model. I worked on building the cockpit, there are 4 things currently missing: the celling, buttons, textures(radar screen), and chairs. I decided to remove a console that was for a third seat, it just looked awkward. As for the lighting problem through the tiles in the other render, there were no lights on from the decks bellow, however i found a random light on the edge of the document, that seems to have helped. Please let me know what you think.

The cockpit looks great so far. A good start.

About the light from beyond the edge: Switch it off and see if it was the reason...

Looks like a good start, I like the cockpit!

The dotted lines on the floor are most likely tiny gaps bewteen the repeated segments. if you can, replace the mutliple floor parts with one continuous object.

In the light creation menu there is a drop-down list, try some of the photometric lights, they can be quite useful. They might look a little grainy with the default settings, and take more time to render when properly adjusted though.
Also you can try experimenting with the 'Light Tracer' to improve the lighting.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. In response to the floor tiles, they are overlapping at the seams, so that cant be the problem, however for the next update, i will join the tiles into 1 object and see if that fixes the problem. As for the Photometric lights, once i complete the modeling of this deck I will play around with the lighting and try the photometric lights. At that point I will also try the light tracer. As for now, here is an update, i decided to leave the buttons, switches, knobs, levers, lights, and displays for the last thing to do on this deck. I built the auxiliary controls (ie. computer, Nav station, and COM station). For some reason the COM station and Nav station appear a bit smooth, they are suppose to be hard edged, if anyone has an idea on why this is, or how to fix it, please let me know. The next step will be the chairs, the couch, and the Dejark table. Please let me know what you think.
