There are many ships that are designated exploratory cruisers, exploratory frigates, etc. But also many combat vessels as pure frigates, pure cruisers, etc.

At last about the "canon" combat vessels (Akira, Sovereign, Prometheus), you can see that the primary task of Starfleet is still exploration. Although its iportance decreased due to the wars with the Cardassians, the Dominion and the Borg. But nonetheless it exists.
Exactly.

Starfleet was chartered to "seek out new life..." but also charged with defending the Federation as well. So it's ships would be able to fill combat roles, and not have purely defensive stuff on them.

Given that the first of the Wolf Class were being built towards the tail end of the Dominion War it's more then likely there offensive abilities were tweaked to more combat orientated roles.

However, the back history for the class states that although the first three were under construction at the time the Dominion War really got going, contruction was put on hold so that Starfleet could divert those resources to ships that they could get out onto the front line much quicker. Something new, like the Wolf and it's kin, had to wait

But war tends to see weapons developed that much quicker than normal, so I can image that a new generation of phasers and torpedoes would have been developed - as would have new defensive systems for Starships. The Wolf probubly benefited from that.

First go at the main navigational deflector;

The "dish" part of it is going to change, it's a rough knock-up just to give an idea.

Becasue "plan a" for the deflector bays went to pot, I will be building in some sort of "hard-docked"/"captains yacht" type craft. Just need to find some time to draft a few designs...

C&C welcome - more as and when

Just got back here. Interesting to read all the different takes on the nacelle LOS issue, certainly doesn't take anything away from the ship or the modeling. Very nice!

If you go too far down the "why is it like that" on a sci-fi show, you can do a whole Andy Rooney routine, 'did you ever notice....'

Well, unfortunately, the greatest developments, mankind made till now, came through warfare.
I desperately hope that this will change in this century, because if mankind is to travel the stars, the other sentient beings of the universe won't accept a race that is at war with their own kind. that is not really good.

Nice work on the deflector.

See the Shadows of Darkness, Hear the Scream of Cruelty...

Thank you, one and all

@ Redeyes - I quite agree. It is after all sci-fi. Can we not just enjoy it as that, and worry less about the how's and whys?
I often find if you work from the premise that something works to start with, an explanation generally comes to mind that fits, without requiring the entire universe to change. Maybe it's because I'm dyslexic and I see the world differently, or maybe it's because I'm just bloody minded. I’m the sort of person who will question things, not because I’m stupid, or trying to annoy, but because sometimes you have to question things in order to get people to see there is another way of doing things, and you can “think outside the box,” LOL.
Believe me, I can nit-pick with the best of them; but once you start doing that – you stop enjoying things. I’d rather have fun.

@ Aresius - Sad but true. I grew up in a military household, and have spent the better part of my life annoying the hell out of my family because I believe that there is a better way then using guns to solve problems (and yet, I am still a big fan of westerns... go figure). Violence leads to violence. The only way to stop a fight is to quite simply stop fighting.

@ XRaiderV1.7 - Thank you many times over...

The fun with the main navigational deflector continues... I think I have rebuilt it five, maybe six times now. I'll get some renders up later of where it stands. I'm much happier with it. Means I can start work on the upper bay, which will be more interesting...

More, as and when... and certainly after some sleep!

I'd love to see this vessel in a music video with the song "Citizen Soldier" by 3 Doors Down or "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast" by Airbourne on Youtube.

Those work, being a rock and metal fan I can live with those... There's a couple of Metallica tracks that would work well too.

Mind you I have a preference for Mike Oldfield's "Harbinger" from his upcomng album "Music of the Spheres." Mind you, a good friend of mine, one Adrian James, adapted a track from his album (das Gift) for use for animations for this ship - and is, I believe, recording something "inspired" for it.

Updates on the main deflector;

Added some colour, and a bit of a glow to make it more deflector like... not the shape of dish I was planning to go with, but it grew on me...

shame it's got errors. Still that's something for later today... OMG, is that really the time? Time for sleep

C&C welcome. More as and when...
