Well, I don't use scanline for animations anymore. It doesn't support 3D motion blur, which is often essential for the photorealistic work I'm involved it. Mental Ray is fantastic, but a little on the slow with motion blur. If money is no object, I would recommend Vray. I use Vray for pretty much 95% of my work. It's fantastic, and quite fast when it comes to rendering.

I wasnt too impressed with Vray speed when I tried a trail version, maybe when $$ isnt so tight Ill look at it again. I am taking a break from the contest WIP to move this over to MR. After beating on a lower poly project I figured MR out a bit more. Sadly for mesh errors MR is horrible since it tends to obliterate warped hidden edges or small pinches. Great if you dont mind a sloppy mesh. Something that sucks here is some of the objects on this project all the hidden edges got turned all wach somewhere along the line. Either a bad save or a restore from a crash so im having to fix this crap as I go

Hopefully these renders clearly show I am converting her to mental ray, What I am doing so slowly moving all the materials to mental ray materials. Since I can get AO on them (it is a option in the material not a global setting sadly -_-') I also gain light emitting materials this way too. Not sure if this is visible in the renders I am posting. As well a look at the landing pad shows the issues if non MR materials in MR that isn't a reflection on the floor but the BG behind the ship.

The biggest issue is the hellish LAG from the material editor. It doesn't do this to me on my Other projects. So I'm hoping someone will know how I can speed it up. If I have the material editor open it lags things in pulses. IE ever min or so it'll lag and hang the app for maybe 20 to 30 seconds. It is worse if I am mucking about in the material editor. I know many will say use scanline in the editor. PROBLEM is all MR mats appear black if I do and well that defeats the purpose of the graphical display and leaves me guessing on the rendered outcome. So if anyone knows of some hidden buried setting let me know

Colours and crap: I am currently looking at what is what and how it looks and considering some changes in things as well. So some materials atm look really odd the copper material is a good example. Depending how I set things up its on the far ends of yuck. shrug. Figure it'll take some time for me to learn the materials. Real pain since I have yet to find a decent consistent tuts. Most results are crap make profit redirect sites full of mallware flash adds. -_- And max has NOTHING for tuts short of the one lighting tut that only shows one solution to the renderer.


BTW there is no post on the renders.

Originally it started as a Maya-based MR community but currently they offer support for all 3D packages that intgrate MR. In the tutorial section you'll find several tuts on lighting with MR + 3ds max.

In the forums there is also a lot of useful information.

Are you using Arch&Design materials on this? That would be your best bet on what you are trying to achieve.

Yes I um WAS. But it was lagging so horribly I couldn't do anything in MR. The viewport would take me hours to set up a material and apply. I don't know what is with it if there is some setting or if it is just my system sucks ass that badly or WHAT. I pretty much only use the new MR3.5 mats right now.

This is part of why I am posting now to say this project is pretty DEAD right now. The lag and issues regarding the mesh and plain old burn out have made this more than entertaining.

Not to worry, I have passed it on to one other for finishing work you should see something of it later as well I am working on converting it over to a older version of max for someone else who is interested in finishing her off. Quite curious how each individual mesh will evolve. Right not I have no plans to pass the mesh to anyone outside of these 2 people so plz do not ask. I HOWEVER am mulling over letting these two decide if they want to release their versions to the public. I figure I will approach this when the time comes. Not naming names ATM. I will let them decide to post a WIP or not.

Yes I do remember the dock and should get that dealt with in short order. This I am considering doing a public release of so it gets used. or whatever heh. Doubt Ill do anything with it.

Again sorry for this sort of news but I am really burnt out on Trek and to a extent 3d. Im chugging along on the contest model and the touhou project over at Foundation3d and 3dscifi. If there is enough interest in the Wings of War mesh here I could post some WIP of it.

A shame to hear about this glorious Connie mesh being, as you say, pretty much "DEAD" right now but considering the amount of frustration your posts say it's causing you I can understand your situation.

Can only hope this isn't the last we see of her as it would be a great shame
