My first WIP: A simple Viper Mark I Animation I recently got into 3D, mostly inspired by the CG work on the Battlestar Galactica show, though I always had interest in 3D modeling and graphics/animation, just never had the time to really get into it. I've made it one of my "life goals" if you will, to work and get better at CG until I'm able to produce work close to the caliber of the re-imagined BSG show. About 3 weeks ago I knew basically nothing about animation, but somehow I spent so much time researching, learning from tutorials, and just lots of trial and error that I managed to produce something that I'm pretty happy with, even though it's not even 11 seconds long lol. Though let me tell you, they were the most difficult 11 seconds to produce ever! I'll need a good long break from it all till i work on my Viper Scene 02. Anyways, enough blabbering. CLICK TO VIEW To see what I'm going to work on next, click on the "work in progress" link on the site. I hope you enjoy, comments are welcome of course ![]() If anyone knows where I can find a LWO of a Viper Mark II with pilot, helmet (and modeled cockpit too if possible) and is willing to have their model featured in the next animation, just let me know. If I cant find it, I'll have to model it myself, and that'll delay the animation further since I never modeled anything, and it'd take me time to get a viper model of the quality I'm seeking. Also, as you can see my engine light rig is no good. If anyone has any suggestions on how to build an accurate Viper Mark II engine light rig for LightWave, I'd appreciate the help.

Looks like a really nice start. ![]() At this point it's probably not necessary to have two minutes of credits for a 40 sec animation though. You might want to save that for the final stuff.

One small suggestion: on the flip over, you need to set the tension in the graph editor to 1 (or -1) at the beginning of the flip. That way, the viper won't dip down before flipping over. The fact that it over-shoots and compensates at the end is effective. Otherwise, sweet.

Thanx for the comments guys. Jeffry, yeah I realized that after it was all done lol. After all the animation is only 11 seconds long but the video was like 2 min or something. However there is an animation-only quicktime movie I had made, even though the contrast got messed up, the space background is not dark enough, I dont know why the quicktime format changed that, the .avi seemed to have preserved the darkness. It was a first revision after all, next one I'll just state who made the modeling and who made the animation and that's it. DaveWh, Thanx for the suggestion. I'll have a look into tensions. Also, that first dip was not intentional, but I ended up liking it somewhat. I didnt want a flip that was perfect, but it makes sense to have the overshoot at the end, and not have any deviation at the beginning of the flip. Right now my biggest issue is the engines though, I need to work on getting that flame-type lighting. Thanx for the comments and suggestions though.

There have been a few threads in the Q&A area regarding BSG engine effects... Do a search in that area and I'm sure a few things will pop up.

Hmm..I did a few searches and came across one thread about viper eignes using lightwave (that had 0 replies to it) and another 2 on 3DS that dont help much. I'll keep lookin though. Also I just noticed...I cut the power on the flipping Viper too late...you barely see the engine cutting out while it's flipping. Gotta cut them quicker next time

They use volumetric in LW for the effect on the show... This video will give you a little introduction to get you started on it if you haven't use them before in LW. ftp://ftp.newtek.com/multimedia/movi...Volumetric.mov
