Galactic Command: Carrier Designs

As for the carriers, I figured I'd use the most common design in use as of 2515, the Python class Heavy Carrier.

I was using the USS Nimitz [CVN-68] as sort of an inspiration from my DVD cover for "The Final Countdown," so the COMCON tower may reflect that (starboard aft of the ship). I'm planning on using the BSG idea of launch tubes for sending the fighters out, but the landing will be on topside, which explains the windows I've placed in the COMCON tower. The pic I have here will be updated once I've come anywhere close to completing the design.

The ship I'll be using as an example will be the lead of the Fifth Marauder Fleet, G.C.N.V. Iowa [CVH-105771].

The text on the ship will NOT be added until texturing is completed.

A side note:

The bay built into the COMCON tower was put in first to determine where I'm going to place the main sideboard bays; it isn't used all that often in GALCOM. It was also placed to determine where the sideboard missile launchers will be set up.

UPDATE:
The view included in this edit includes the insertion of the launch bay and engine extensions to the hull. The 8 "legs" in the back are to receive the Hawking Drive Propulsion Units once I get the main hull detailed a bit more, and maybe land a couple of fighters on the tarmac deck (topside) and show a couple launching for scale purposes in the final setup.

Caption: Although it doesn't show, I've added 3 launch tubes to the lower portion of the forward hull. The "legs" are for the propulsion units, to be added later.

A Major update here:

Because the damn file wasn't saved when I was called in for an emergency shift on 12 May, I had to restart the entire file but instead of the standard 500-300-100 block, I increased the length to 2,000 and the width to 600.

The advantage to this is the scaling was much better, especially when doing the COMCON tower on the starboard aft. I plan to put in something to hold it up to prevent it from being sheared off in Omega or Hawking Drive jumps.

Another advantage is it gives me a more accurate view on the sheer size of the beast, with a total volume of 120,000,000 cubic feet (1 Max Grid unit being equal to 1 square foot, and the surface grids being 17 times that).

Below are the perspective view and the orthos of the new version of this starship, the Python Class Heavy Carrier.

Launch tubes...

The ones on the right launch the bombers, which are decisively larger than standard fighters.

(That many tubes = the capability of launching half its wing simultaneously)

You'll see what I mean when I post the Pteradactyl Class Bomber.

Ah I see. It reminds me a bit of a certain (very new) rocket launcher which can fire half of its arsenal at once, with the rest following closely. Nice idea, can't wait to see the ship and bombers finished

The Pteradactyl in the GALCOM universe was "borrowed" from the Berecqian Empire, when they joined shortly after the first armed conflict against them. They didn't want any more trouble with Earth, so they became a member of the Galactic Systems Alliance in the early 23rd century.

UPDATE: I have to thank Star Creations for the plans to the Tomcat, as they will be used as a base for the XF-1400 series starfighter when I get to it, completely shelling the original XF-1400 fighter that I had going, even though looking at the plans for the F-14a, I discovered I wasn't that far off from the original plane.

Another Update:

The Shuttle Bay doors and the Barricade Towers were added, which indicates the viable landing lanes on the carrier's tarmac section. I've only to begin the minute details now, including the tarmac section's paint job and full texturing rounds. This will include the installment of aft thrusters, gunnery and lighting.

UPDATE:
The HD Unit Legs have been installed, which gave me an idea for the struts for between the COMCON tower and the aft-starboard HD leg. I was going to affix the struts to the side of the Engine Section, but that changed my mind on it.

Caption: The extensions for the HD Propulsion units gave me a clue as to where to place the struts for the COMCON tower to keep it from shearing off at high velocity.

Correction on an earlier post:

I mentioned in a previous post that the Python could launch half its wing...that was not correct. She carries a full wave of 100, with only 20 bombers. Therefore, she only launches 3 squads at once, and 2 bombers, seeing as this ship is 2,000 feet long and 600 wide.

Right now, I'm debating whether or not to put doors on the launch tubes.
