A heat sink works regardless of vacuum. It's all about the internal circulation and coolant pressure. If a vessel is operating in space and the temperature is say 273 degrees Kelvin (the freezing point of water) then say 300 degree kv coolant being pumped into a heat sink would loose it's heat as it is exposed to the surrounding temp of the environment. It's the same principle as the radiator in your car.

Space is very very cold, heat sinks work perfectly in space infact much more efficiently than down on earth. Very cool design by the way.

I was always under the conception that you'd need some sort of matter to transport heat. I had double glazing and air cooling vs. liquid cooling in mind which is convectective heat transfer but I forgot that there is also thermal radiation which is at work when (for example) the sun heats the earth. (had to look this up but it is pretty obvious when you think about it )

i really like the design, i was actually looking at it the wrong way round before you put the engines in and it still looked quite interesting

as for heat exchanges, the traditional "radiator" design has the hot fluid going thought something that maximises area in contact with a cold fluid (air or water is the most comon but liquid salts are also used) though some kind of high conductive substance like copper. this will obviously have almost no use in space since vacume cannot conduct heat in any way. in space what you want is to promote radiation, you still want a big area but all that area must have normals pointing away from the rest of the heatsink or one surface will just be iradiating the one next to it. in this situation surface treatment is king and even now we start to have materials that absorb very little radiation but emit allot alowing for good cooling (this is actually coming to car & house paint in the next couple years). finally you can have fase changing cooling and vent the hot gasses out of the ship all together but that wont last for very long (it does serve as a good emergency measure though).

i seem to have gotten a bit long winded, sorry if its too long or far off topic..

Well, the heat sink thing really got a bit scientific, but I will now use the orange plates of the blades as heat sinks. The outsides are very flat and big so that the heat can radiate away from the spaceship and the inside has a finned radiator (well as soon as I model them) where heat can be blown out from the ships internal cooling system, in case of an emergency, or when in an atmospheric environment.

I also changed the colour to this beige, orange combination. I think it looks quite good and fits a little bit better than my "prototype green". You can also see that I have started on the nose part of the ship - intersecting it and beveling it on all edges. That'll take me some time but it just looks so much better when the edges aren't all hard. Alas, polygon modelling doesn't lend itself to much to beveled edges.

good work on the panelling on the nose, looks very good. Also the primary colour does look better, but I wonder if it would look better with the parts that are currently orange turned green

sorry for the excessive sciencyness of it all, sortof kicked into engineer mode :P

the ship is coming along very nicely though. orange/beige works very well. the holes in the wings are a nice use of negative space. it makes it look more functional somehow. keep it up
