I say referance the Assualt Rifles from Mass Effect.

Think about this,

Ship board Repell. Like in Star Wars ep.4. Most ship are close quarters and with alot of confined spaces so a Carbine or Carbine modified would be a preferance. Something that has a good balance compact and produces effective stopping/ killing power to eleminate the threat. If you look at some of the modern day special forces carbines and varients they have a good blend of length and equipment on them depending on missions.

Ship defense, Ship boarding partys, Away teams, Security. just some of things to keep in mind when designing a weapon.

As for the desgin... um... kinda messed up, i have all my scales wrong, i was using 1/2 for the Di of the barrel but 2/1 for the length... so it looks out of wack... working on it now...

This is a P90 ish type weapon, i am going to rework this as well but i think i will keep the basic desgin.

Matt
What I meant was that Starfleet would be using EM based weapons like a Rail gun but miniaturized as a side arm or a Assault Rifle.

Dont forget the Self propelled caseless rounds as mentioned in the Warhammer 40k universe That the Space Marines use in the Imperial Bolters.

The idea is that inside the round is a set amount of propellent used that is capped with a explosive head. This indicates that the pojectile will continue to gain speed even after it has left the barrel until the propellent is expended thus resulting in the explosive head igniteing for a very limited Area of Effect less than 1 meter. Though the range is limited based on the type and ammount of propellent used, this is effective in close quarter fighting. Theoreticly given the level of tech involved in the Star Trek universe I would like to see a Hybrid of the Mini rail gun with the ability to self propel once leaveing the barral.

If your looking at alternative Firearms look at Caseless Firearms. Heres some Websites that have info on this type of Firearm.

Probably has been said before, but I'm almost 100% sure that a bull-pup is not a carbine. A bull-pup is for example, a Tavor. A carbine is for example an m14.

Bull-pup's have magazine's located closer to the solder than a carbines, therefore the weight of the weapon is centered primarily "closer" to the soldier, making it ten-times easier to maneuver, but the downfall is that it overheats quite fast.

Its not uncommon for members with threads not to be on the forums for days or weeks at a time. They have lives too!!!
