Thanks for the comments guys,

Chrono has very good points concering the CIWS. Currend day vessels indeed have relatively few defences becquse the threat has been very low and most navies work with fleet tactics, where multiple ships create overlapping defence umbrella's. The russian always had good tactics in their closets to counter this, and that's saturation, not fireing 1-3 missiles, but using wings of attack craft to launch a few dozen missiles at US ships. This would swamp their defences and ensure hits of at least a few missiles.

With this in mind, since Mars is the 'agressor' in my backstory, breaking free towards independence, they expect to be fighting a superior force and thus they produce their ships with ample defences to ensure survival to fight another day.

And Meph we have to remember that we can't completely compare today's wet navy with advanced weaponry that has even longer range and is far more accurate. Defense umbrella's and mass saturations will very much change in the face of that. CIWS will have to be significantly more lethal than more systems because of the extra hardening that fighters and such small units will have to keep the unit protected against micro-meteorites, radiation, etc.

Also there is the extra dimension of combat that almost removes or trades stealth vessels like submarines for regular combat units.

Indeed, true, true. I think we can easilly add a few zeroes to the combat ranges in space. And with no horizon or thermal layers to hide behind, ships will be spotted from quite a long way away.
Oh, a nice combat tactic just came to me, combat jumps! Jumping back into realspace veruy close to the target, hoping to have the advantage of surprise and first stike. :P

On the CIWS, I'm hoping to have that sucker unwrapped and mapped by the end of this afternoon. *moans & groans* Here we go, eyes to infinite, mind to zero... unwrapping time!

Some textures and uvw unwraps need some tweaking. Especially the main gun housing gave me a headache to unwrap...
Oh, and I still need to do the base of the gun too.
