| Hehe, I can't wait to get far enough with the modeling and texturing so I can start on the FX for the firing. It's already gotten in my head that I should model different kinds of ammo too, both for the missiles as well as main guns ![]() I've already got a few ideas for the long range missile for which I just modeled the launcher. The prespective of the tubes might look a little 'off' at first but keep in mind that these do not fire straight forward. Just like a modern submarine they fire under a rougly 300° angle to the center line. |

| SFM Guru | hehe, nice, you might as well go ahead and call the long range missiles torpedoes, those look a lot like torpedo tubes. One thing is there seems to be something weird going on top of the launcher, possibly a mesh error? The smoothing on the "corner" boxes looks a bit messed up too. |

| Hehehe, yup, that sure is a huge frickin' missile array! Yesterday I've been sketching a bit (I should get a new power supply for my scanner). I've come up with a few types of missiles I'd like to model for the launcher. -A fleet/planet attrition missile holding 7 nuclear submunitions much like a contemporary MRV ballistic missile. -A massive hull penetrator loosely inspired by a contemporary APDS tank round, but with a ring of lasers to soften up the target's hull just before impact. -A planetary support missile holding a rotary launcher for 6 cruise missiles to be released after atmospheric entry. -Perhaps a classic high explosive one? And yup, the mesh errors are the result of the paneling. Sadly when working with vray materials, the polygons are all black in the viewport so these kinds of errors can only be found on a finsihed render. So if you see anything anywhere on one of my renders that seems a bit 'off', don't hesitate to call it out. |

| Here's the first of the Long Range Missiles. I decided to start with the massive hull penetrator. The idea for the missiles is that I've got one type of main body, holding the fuel, control thursters and main engine and that the tip of the missile is interchangeable. So this being the hull penetrator, I gave it ten sections as a 'jacket' each made from relatively low cost and disposable laser technology, designed for one use only. The idea being that each 'pod' holds capacitators and a laser head able to discharge the entire load in one high-intensity burst to weaken the hull just before being ejected and allowing the sabot to dig deep into the enemy ship. The sabot is also propelled extra by an explosive charge after the release of the 'jacket'. Two of the pods hold sensors instead of lasers for homing in on a specific point on the target. The sabot itself I made clean and simple. An indrecibly dense and hard tunsgten tip followed by a depleted uranium shaft. The tungsten allows it to penenetrate very thick armour and the Depleted uranium (next bit comes from wikipedia) is pyrophoric; the heated fragments of the penetrator ignite after impact on contact with air, setting fire to fuel and/or ammunition in the target vehicle, thereby compensating for the lack of an explosive warhead in the penetrator. Additionally, DU penetrators exhibit significant adiabatic shear band formation. During impact, fractures along these bands cause the tip of the penetrator to continuously shed material. This erosion maintains the tip's conical shape and increases the amount of pyrophoric fragments released behind the target armour. So as soon as the DU hits the atmosphere inside the ship, nasty results assured! |

| interesting design on the missile! I especially like the lasers idea.. |

| alright meph the beast is now even more beasty, I love the hull penetrater. The use of du was very smart. End result of a hit from this thing = BIG FREAKIN HOLE! I want one to call my own. You taking orders? |

| Project Lead on SFM Film | Very cool Missile. You would not want to be around when that one goes off. |

| SFM Guru | Great missile, cool idea on the lasers, can also burn through any sort of reactive armour. Although I can imagine how much these things would be worth, lol. Lasers of that output even for one time use wouldn't be that cheap. They'd have an accountant on the bridge who would decide if its economically viable to use the munition in any situation, lol. |
