2nd project

After taking a break for a while after my lego tie fighter, for no reason other than I'm exceedingly lazy, I decided to start another project yesterday. I'm modeling the Stargate from the series of the same name. It's going to be a high poly model and I'd say I'm trying to make it as screen accurate as possible, but again, that lazy thing. I really don't want to sift through all the show's for reference images. So I'm pretty much just going off memory. Anyways, here's my progress so far:

Here I was just playing around with textures and lighting for the chevrons (no idea what I'm doing here)

Well, next up for today: the cutouts for the chevrons and start on the small details such as the little arches and the greebles behind the chevrons and that outer ridge.

Again, be gentle. This is only the second thing I've ever tried to make.

Small update. Haven't gotten much done on it as it hasn't rained in a while so my allergies are kicking my arse. That and I've been lazy. But I've made the arches for around the gate. The images are big, so I'm just going to link to them.

Here's the first arch

First arch

And how they look on the gate

Ok, so I made those designs that go around the gate between the inner ring and the event horizon. Question I have is is there a relatively quick way in which I can fill in the gaps between the designs, or am i going to have to go through the laborious task of appending polygons to the whole thing?

Anyways, after I have it filled in I'm going to do a bend deform and then duplicate it around the gate then move on to making the glyphs.

Not quite sure of what you are asking here. what gaps are you talking about and what polygons?

Well, the way I did it was by making each of those shapes separately to match a reference image. Now I need to connect them all together so they aren't just floating there over a big hole. So I was just wondering if there was a faster way of doing that without doing the laborious and time consuming task of going through and appending polygons between all the shapes. Like doing a boolean union with a plane, or doing some sort of cap thing like Max has once it's in place on the gate.

Well, If I am understanding you correctly, each circle etc is its own object? and you want to attach them to the gate? Is there a reason you don't want to keep them a separate object within the overall mesh? This way you can modify them whenever the hell you want if you need to. I don't really see it a necessity to boolean anything like that right now. If you are using max you can just use the "Attach" command to collapse the mesh later on

The reason I see that I can't do that is because they are recessed into the gate and not bumps on it so to say, so if I just place them against the gate the the front faces of the gate poke through so you can't see them. So what I'm saying is that they are sticking into the gate and not out of it.
