| SFM Obsessed | Unofficial Speed Modelling challenge #1 Hi all, I've talked about creating a speed modelling challenge before and thanks to some gentle kicking from other board members I've finally gotten around to creating the first one. If it's popular then there will be more, potentially with the winner choosing the next subject This is just for fun and hopefully will help to improve people's skills and speed of modelling. There will be a time limit on each challenge, but I won't be forcing people to stick to it too rigidly, just so long as you try your best to meet the time. As different people use different applications and have different hardware, this is purely about modelling. There is no requirement for texturing or even providing a fully rigged and lit render of the final model. This should mean that people with lower spec machines or access to basic 3d applications will still be able to enter. However, if you want to go wild on your final render then go for it! So, on with the "rules!" We'll keep it fairly simple for now 1. You must show a "complete" render of the model. In addition to this, you must show the wireframe of the model. If you are using subdivision to create your models then you should try to show the model without the subdivision if possible in the wireframe shot. Why? This will help others to see how you made the model and hopefully help them to learn from it 2. Two images are required for each entry, both 800x600; one of the final model and one of the wireframe. The main image must have your name, application and time taken to model the object 3. You do not need to post your WIP images, but you can if you want 4. All entries/WIP images will be posted in this thread. This contest runs on trust, so we don't want to have to start opening and closing threads at specific times 5. No cheating! It's just for fun and to challenge yourself as well as help others out, so try to be honest about how long it took you to create the model 6. You can enter as many times as you like! It would great if people could remember to attach their images to the thread so that they are retained too If anyone has comments or suggestions on the rules, please let me know either in the thread or via PM. On to the first topic... "Communication devices" From headsets to hand held devices, your task is to model any kind of communication device you can think of. Whether you want to model two tin cans and a piece of string or an existing design from Sci-fi or the real world then go for it! Time limit: For the first contest the time limit will be a little longer than normal. Try to stick within 90 minutes The deadline: 7th September. This means you have about three weeks to find a single 90 minute slot or more if you want to enter more than one model Examples: ![]() ![]() EDITS: Comments from the thread in case they disappear off the page: ------- The 90 minutes is for modelling time only Things that are not included in modelling time: - Concepting (2D) - render time - texturing time - lighting - environment (if you want to add an environment to your final render, feel free to do so) Things that are included in the 90 minutes - 3d modelling! If you are doing your concept work in 3d then you should start with a brand new model for the 90 minutes and not with the prototype/concept model ------- The plan is three weeks model time, then one week to get the votes in before the next challenge appears, so effectively a new topic each month ------- |

| SFM Guru | He won't, this isn't the world cup anyways. And if someone wants to cheat in a "just for fun challenge" then that's just sad. I have a question, is it 90 mins for modelling only or for the whole thing start to finish? As in does creation of a concept included or not included in the 90 mins? Also just to clarify, so if I understood right, you'll be adding new themes every couple days/week until sept 7th? And we can choose any one of them? |

| You will not, but this really is for fun and it's just up to people if they want to cheat or not. Seeing as tehre are no real prices or anything, I do not see a point in cheating at all. Anyway, as I said before Spud, good one and will certainly attend. |

| SFM Obsessed | The plan is three weeks model time, then one week to get the votes in before the next challenge appears, so effectively a new topic each month. There's no real way of knowing if someone has stuck to the time limit or not, but I'm hoping people will be fairly honest about it as this is just for fun. The only "penalty" for overrunning is that any votes for your entry will not be included in the final scores. I'll send out some guidelines for voting (if we get enough entries!) so that credit isn't just given to the person who models the most details in the available time. Creativity and assisting other members will be factors too, so there might be a publically voted for winner and a separate "senior members/mods/admins" winner too - we'll see how it goes first |

| I did a quick model in less than 40 minutes I know it wouldn't win any contest, but I will post it just to add some "life" to this thread ![]() It's a very simple device, based on a typical "hands-free" mic+headphone set. It has two buttons to start/end communication. I would add some more buttons but I'm going back to continue working on my other projects ![]() ![]() ![]() |
