What Malice said.....

And the idea of a Colonial Bomber sounds fine but....I'd rather see an "Armed Personnel Carrier"-Shuttle for the Marines....

(I know, they use the Raptors for this, but I was thinking "bigger"....think Blackhawk!! )

been talking with Perseus about using Cygnus in a fanfiction project, and here's some tech details he came up with
Quote:

Technical Specs I've come up with so far would be:

Heavy Frigate Bellerophon (Cygnus-Class)

Length: 600m
Width: 240m
Height: 96m

Armament:
20 RailGun Turrets (depends on the final model :-))
2 forward mounted HighCal. RailGuns (four would be overkill )
8 forward mounted Anti-ship missile launchers (8 Reloads each, eight tactical nuclear warheads)
Lots of AA-guns

Crew 372

Fighters: None, but six Raptors....(for scouting ahead) and two RAT's (Rhino Assault Transport, something we came up with....something like a Blackhawk...armed personnel carrier)

The Cygnus-Class of Heavy Frigates was conceived as a heavily armed escort for the heavier units like Battlestars and Cruisers, as well as presenting a testbed for lots of the advanced circuitry that, after extensive testing, was incorporated into the new Titan-Class Destroyers (Titan and Perseus finished, several other units still under construction...)

Another thing that was tested on the Cygnus-Class were the heavy batteries in the bow, already known from the Mercury-Class Battlestar but previously unheard of on a vessel of this size.
For it's purpose, to act as an escort against Fighters and other capital ships, the Cygnus-Class is heavily armed and armored, but has no fighter complement of it's own. The only ships these frigates are carrying are Raptors, a group of six Raptors is to be posted aboard each frigate.

Concerning Speed and Manoeverability, none other known capital ship can keep up with the Cygnus-Class....it's flank speed is almost twice the Mercury-Class Battlestars!

The ship's crew is, due to heavy automation, only 300 people, plus 72 as Marine Detachment.
Crew quarters are similar to the bunks on the old Columbia-Class Battlestars (like Galactica), up to six people sharing a "room".

So much of the interiour space has been dedicated to weapons and engines that even the lifestation has only basic equipment, just like the recreational facilities are downsized to a gym and a "rec room", meaning that serving on such a vessel would be considerably "rougher" than doing so on a Battlestar...
some things to note highlighted in red . . .

I've had FOUR huge cannons on there from the start

also there are 18 'frak' cannons mounted on the model currently

and here's my idea for my colonial bomber
a little 'Larsen-esque' eh?
those are giant gatling guns, and a bunch of heatseekers in the wing-bays, maybe a torpedo or two
includes nifty rolling ladder! haha

Looking great. Loving the detail on the turrets and I like the pod/wings. I think I prefered the two turrets more evenly spaced on those pods from a previous rev, but this looks great.

How does this (to my thinking, massive) arsenal compare with a Battlestar's? I would be wary of it having too many guns... I mean if it's to be a escort vessel.

Good point BX....especially when you take into account that Galactica herself only has what, 24 of these turrets?

But there's another thought here: Galactica had to dedicate a lot of internal space for the Vipers, for the hangars, for the Vipers ammo and fuel....
Space that the Cygnus, because it only carries a few Raptors, can use for more guns...

Still, Cygnus IS a bit overgunned....but maybe the turrets have a different caliber than those of Galactica?
Like a cruiser in WWII had smaller guns than a battleship, but sometimes more of them....? (they would have a higher rate of fire also....)

<grins> You're gonna have to go into business designing for fiction projects, backstept... ^_^

I'm going to be looking forward to see how you evolve that bomber idea of yours, too. Would I be correct in assuming that it's intended for attacking planetary based installations? Or do you see it as a cap ship killer?

Lookin good...

I was thinking it would be a cap ship killer, but like any warplane it can be outfitted to perform different roles

this bomber is as fast or faster than a viper in a straight line, but it's slower in maneuvers

what should I call this thing?
