I'm finally making some progress on the secondary hull. Here's a shot of the main deflector and the photorp launcher mounted above it:

The depth-of-field effect was inspired by the photos that recently popped up online of the Trek starship miniatures just before they were sold at auction. I love the way it looks but this one rendering took over 20 minutes so I probably won't be doing it too often.

Here are a couple more:

A few things to note about the model's current state:

1. The hull textures are my usual generic placeholders and will eventually be replaced .
2. Several objects still need to have their edges chamfered to soften them a little bit. Just haven't gotten around to all of them yet.
3. If you're wondering what happened to the ring inside the deflector cowling, it will return. I was going to rebuild it today but I wound up spending almost all my time on the torpedo launchers. Speaking of which...
4. The reason the launcher on the underside of the deflector only has one tube is because it's a quantum torpedo launcher. I have some more greebles to add on either side of the tube as well. Oh, and the red glow would probably not be there unless they were preparing to fire; I just threw it in for dramatic effect.

For anyone who's interested, current polycount is a little over 207,000. That's actually down from almost 220,000 before I started optimizing the larger Sub-D objects, even with the addition of the torp launchers. With most of the optimizing left to go, I'm hopeful of keeping the finished model under 200,000, including modeled windows.

Okay, two questions for those more knowledgable than my humble self:

1. What is the "correct" size of a photon/quantum torpedo launch tube? I just eyeballed mine and now I realize they're almost nine feet wide! I'm already working on shrinking them down to about six feet at the most but it would be helpful to know if there's any kind of established measurement out there.

2. How the heck do I get a thumbnail to show up in the thread list? I know the board software is supposed to grab the first attachment in the thread but there must be some limitation on how far into the thread it looks because it's not finding my one and only attachment on the previous page. Whatever the reason, I need to know what to do about it now, up to and including starting a whole new thread.

Looking good. I'm not sure on how big the tubes should be, but the casing are casket sized. Your best bet for reference is the refit enterprise I'm thinking.

it right now only looks in the first post for the first attachment.
Torps are about half a deck high depending on type. I think quants are smaller. (TNG movies) But I dont doubt later on you could launce them all from a generic tube. Accual measurements are something I havent had much luck with myself. I just guess roughly based on the type 4s seen in the TMP films.

This is probably way off base, but look at the first image. Doesn't it look like the robot from Short Circuit driving through a peekhole?

Maybe I am just sleep deprived......

Well, about the torpedos itself, you can tahe the StarTrek: Episode, where K'Eyhlr is introduced, as a reference...
There you see, that a torpedo has about the lenght of 2 meters and by relation the width of about 3 fourth of a meter... the heigt is rougthly 40-50 cm...
The fowwoling measurement I've found says 2.1meters for length, 0.76meters for width and 0.45meters for heigth... it's from the StarTrek: Technical Blueproint for StarTrek: TNG, so this is still canon...

The quantum torpedos are the same, only shaped different...

This is correct *nods* think also of Spock's Casket in ST:II. And remember also that the torpedo tubes also handles interstellar probes up to three meters in length (Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, TNG Technical manual) and that uantum torpedoe's are pysically the same size, but much heavier, which is why three-five p-torps can be launched at a time, but only 1-2 q-torps.

With the way your lighting set-up works it's almost a crime not to use a DoF scheme! I'd just do it in post.
