Actually, it does have "staff canons", 4 of them, that's what the Plasma Pulse Cannons (PPC) are. And the missles are slung underneath the slanted structure leading to the fighter bays, like a bomber would. There's also 22 double barrel rail guns.

I wouldnt go with another Daedelous clone even a small one, it should have a handicap like no fighters, just a few jumpers for shuttles like the enterprise.
And have it make up for the handicap with the extra tech from the asgard and the ancients. Just my two cents worth.

Look back on page 95 I think it is, for the specs. A lot of the things you suggest are already there. The only thing missing is the cloak from the Al'Kesh or the Tel'tek. The Ha'Tak is the Goa'uld mothership.
It's not exactly a clone of the Big D, just shares a similar outward appearance. It shares a lot of parts with the Daedalus, but in essence it's completely different. Naturally, because it is smaller, the inside is VERY different, but again, shares the same theme as the Daedalus. The one huge difference is that the Paladin cannot carry much cargo at all, and a very limited lab count, only 1. Overall, with exception to the appearance, it is as different from the Daedalus as the Prometheus was. Also, with it's smaller design and smaller crew, it is able to be commanded by a lower rank AF officer, like a Major or even a Captain. It's the kind of ship Maj. Lorne would be given command of. God knows he's been a Maj. far too long. Since season 5 I think. It also addresses a major drawback of the Daedalus. The Big D tries to do everything, war ship, cargo ship, carrier, transport, etc etc. But it doesn't do any of those things exceedingly well. The Paladin however, does. It is a pure war ship. The main reason for having the hangars is, so that fighters can go out to patrol, or they can accept a fighter or jumper from another ship if it needs to. It's a kind of safety net.
But oh well, I guess I'm going to make some big changes to it.
