Hello this is a project i began 1 month ago, though haven't posted anything here yet, so here we go..
As a child nothing was cooler than the t-800, i wanted to build one, but lack of money, technology (and being 10 years old at the time). Limited my abilities.
Now I've been given a model of part of a terminator, brilliant. The amount of work is phenomenal, so I'm not complaining.
I have taken it to pieces and am building it again, out of nurbs and rigging it so it works. Every pipe and hydrolic. Then I'm gonna do an animation.
This still is what i started with.
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/1st%20render.jpg
This was my first venture into animating my his shoulder..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/test1.mov
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/test1.wmv
The shoulder blade still needs some work but i'm happy so far. It's nice to be able to see it start to come to life. As you only ever see these guys very breifly in the films.
To show you where i'm going with it, here is a properly rendered image..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/2nd%20render.jpg
Then i started on the backdrop for my character..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/scenetest1.jpg
and that developed into..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/test3.jpg
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/test3.wmv
Then i decided to dump the new flying HK for the old one, as this homage should be to the original films.
And this is about where i'm upto, my terminator is 99% finished. His feet and hands are now done (nightmare of a job). So he can now walk properly, with his feet automated, his hands can grasp and point. His head is now rigged for whatever i need him to do and i've even textured his gun properly..
As well as that i've upped the glow from his eyes, and continued the job of texturing/editing the backdrop..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/filtered2.jpg
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/hand.jpg
Next up, i'm making the resistance...
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/filtered2.mov
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/filtered2.wmv
p.s. sorry about the slow site, i've been assured it will be quicker soon..

Moving on, here is the first test for the resistance..
I'm moving quicker than expected through making this guy. Though he isn't rigged just yet (hence the T pose). His hands are rigged (getting them out of the way early on).
I put quite a bit of time into getting his clothes detailed. As my previous characters never seem to have enough detail..
The skin isn't quite finished yet, around his mouth you can see where the sub-surface scattering doesn't work out. His eyes are also still too white.
Though his face isn't rigged yet, i did another face a few months ago and managed to get emotions out of it in around a day (as for talking i haven't tried it yet!?)
When he's fully rigged i'll be moving onto his gun and maybe a mode of transport..

http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/troop2.mov
And here's my guy tooled up with some serious weaponry..
Next up getting the characters to work properly with each of the weapons.

Sharp and menacing looking Terminator, cool backgrounds. Nice to see the HK Tanks are not forgotten :)
Your trooper kicks some ass too, with the time-delayed charge, and that weapons are nice too. But for his secutiry, tell him to wear a helmet!

Believe it or not, real soldiers wear helmets. I think what u mean to say is: "Real guys don't wear helmets!:D"

mikeb
21st Nov 2006, 02:47
The polycounts are rising all the time, the soldier is on around 25000 (inc weapons), the terminator is about 150000 for now. And 0 polys on helmets..
So here is the next phase, animating the guy and making a template for possibly more characters.
I'm still having a bit of trouble rigging him, so i decided to do something else. His face. Emotions to be exact, and i'm kind of new to it, but here goes..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/facetest1.mov
It's only a start, and is lo resolution for the moment, i'll do a hi res version when i'm a little happier with the outcome. I'm also going to try him out talking (something i've never tried before).
mikeb
22nd Nov 2006, 23:12
I'm still on the face, been re-working the skin texture, new eyes and added teeth (not very clean ones, but still).
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/trooper0002.jpg
In the background i've reworked his expressions and started to have a dabble with him talking, more on that very soon..
Sanjurjo
22nd Nov 2006, 23:15
mmm... nice, but we can see the fear in his eyes... not bad, as of now, his expression is human... Fear! not bad :p

And here is a full res version of my expressions. Still not finished but enough to move onto animating him talking..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/t800/facetest2.mov
The head is still low resolution as i can boost the number of polygons anytime i want, but it ups the rendertime by 4, the subsurface scattering is also disabled at this time for the same reasons.

I have been burried under other work recently..
Some of the war of the worlds piece i did recently were basically tests i would have had to have done for the 2029 world anyway.
Only the WotW's client paid me for doing them. Happy days.
That said though i am looking forward to moving on with this project in the very near future (excuse the pun).
It's been a while (had to work :(and make myself a new website)). But i'm back now, and going to be attacking this project with new energy and from a new directions, starting with the enviroments (using ideas i came up with during my wotw's clip i did)..

I wonder how many people looked at this thread expecting to see a naked arnie, with flesh, in this thread? :p
Anyway, looking back on the renders, this looks good, very good, have you thought about having a go at updating the original 2 films using your model for the fleshless terminator scenes? :D
very cool, just had look back through the thread again. When look at the human. I thought he looked a bit like Bill Duke. http://www.martindenning.com/images/BillDuke.jpg

Wow, great background work!
Mate............................I dont get to visit as often as I would like too, but when I do it is great to see what has gone on here. This work of yours is great. Like many of us, the T 800 mesh is one on the must do list. Ive worked on my own version on and off for years, but this is fantastic. What made this even more a shock was the fact last night before hitting the sack I pulled my old version and had a tinker. So how bizzare to go online today and see this. I know what you must of put into this mesh. The rigging alone must of caused you some headaches. Just loved the shot of him animated. My only critique.............a small one , is the fire of course. Get the scale right on it and the whole thing would look perfect. Im going to make a point to keep looking for updates on this, as it has sure motivated me. If you ever make this mesh available, please let me know. Congrats on a your progress :thumb:

Seeing as lights are about the most imortant thing about remndering..
When i have a character and know what kind of lighting i'm going to use i render the character with the lights doing 360 around him. I render it out as a quicktime file (as you can scrub back and forth better than with an avi).
As when i get stuck into the full project i don't want to be moving the lights back a bit and fwd a bit and waiting for the render to be sure i got the best lighting for the shot. Now i just have a look at the quicktime and work out which lighting angle best suits the scene..

Can I just say that the Terminator movement was incredibly fluid - Like a real human was walking. It was unsettling and awesome, and I love this thread. Brilliant.
So I’ve been very busy, I’ve got one new character which will be finished in the next few days..
The other thing that I’ve been dumping my time into is extending the universe I’m building in. I'm trying to keep in the style, but i have to add more depth to tell even the simplest story.
The three/ four characters I’m working on are not your basic resistance, they are the best “known” humanity has to offer. As such they will take the war to the machines, not running but getting in front wherever possible and disrupting communications, maintenance and supply routes. Really getting stuck in Skynets teeth.
In order to do this they would need some back up. The terminators have complete air control, and have had for some 20 years. I have to take a bit of a liberty, but as details are thin about resources etc. My guys being the elite, would have access to everything we have left to offer.
So I’m thinking, a small group of troops behind enemy lines, that would constantly be under attack from flying HKs (hunter killers- that over the years have evolved into perfect hunting platforms to track and kill humans). They would need some kind of air support (as rockets alone wouldn’t be enough), for extreme circumstances they’d need backup, and that’s what they’re gonna get..
For the last 2 weeks I’ve been making an A-10 warthog, he's not quite finished but he's nearly there. At first I made him in present day form, as aircraft enthusiasts were very helpful with advice, photos etc.
Then I’ll be 2029’ing him. For a start he'll be going blank instead of blue, I’m not sure about weapons just yet, for homage sake I must keep the nose cannon. Though I’m also thinking the rockets must remain present day technology as we wouldn't be able to develop new ones (or need to for that matter).
The modern guns we use in the future would be copies of the technology we salvage from terminators. Though we still have the means to make them, power them, feed ourselves (for over 20 years).
Here is a Quicktime VR of how my A-10 looks at the moment-

:thumb:million times better than the crapinator they made for T3 and the new tv series "Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles". which by the way is actually quite good and obviously a HELL of a lot better than T3
Edit: I just had to add a small detail to your (already amazing) render ;)
Tried to match it to the original effects from The Terminator, I hope you don't mind :)

Okay so i went away and was buried under work and then new projects took my attention...
However recently i have been busy with a/c again, i dug out my a10 and got him up to scratch adding tones more details and rigging him to a flight simulation i made inside my 3d program (c4d).
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/ufo/flightsim7.wmv
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/ufo/flightsim7.jpg
Then last week i saw a trailer for the new terminator film.. Looks good, still i couldn't help but notice. They have A10's in the clip...
So, is this a case of great minds thinking alike or do you think i was robbed???
Still coming right back at them, i did a Blackhawk clip recently.

http://www.doghouseanimations.com/blackhawk/landingsim2.jpg
So got to thinking, I'm not missing so much to come back to this clip..
They seem to have opened up the ball park again by making this daylight and a desert setting, not unlike what i've been doing recently..
I also did a project recently where i had to do a motorbike simulation to maybe I'll have a bash at those terminator bikes i saw in the trailer..
I'll be back soon.

I thought I'd better add the pilots, so 3 new layers, the pilots, the glass on top (so the pilots look like there inside the chopper), and the third layer is the landing lights. There there was also the sound of the tyres, changed as well.

OK, my first reaction to that clip is that you're a cheat, trying to pass off a real video as something you've built in 3D... :D
Actually, aside from adding some dust swirls from the rotor downwash, I'd say this is done. No such thing though, there's always just one more bit you can see that needs tweaking or refinement when you're the builder ;)

Seeing as i got so technical with my a/c flight simulator i thought I'd overhaul my helicopter flight simulator too. I dusted off my Apache i did for an advert i did a few years ago. This clip is a test to see how smooth and scaled the flight controls work now i've been fiddling about with them..
http://www.doghouseanimations.com/blackhawk/helitest5.wmv
I'm still working on bolting together the flight sim and the landing sim, the a/c sim was all very neat and tidy in the end. Just a matter of dragging and dropping things. This is very messy at the moment.

Still not finished though, i just this moment thought of a way to get the chopper to bounce a little after impact. And I'm still running tests on the dust..
I have done my terminator bike as well and will post it shortly, i get side tracked, not enough hours in the day etc..

So i got out what i had from before and polished it up with a little of what i've learned over 2009.

I forgot how close I'd come to having him rigged. I think he's gonna get active very soon.
I've been going over my mesh controlling the increase of the mesh density by the displacement. I also re-worked the back and chest increasing the details to the skull.
I've been fed up with everything i do looking to clinical. I saw an article in 3dworld a few months back about making something look like it was painted, using displacement maps. It gave me an idea. This is one of my first tests.

One of the most interesting and visually exciting threads I've seen!
I've had some trouble with rigging him. Too many phases in his motions, bits having to catch up to other bits etc.
He is pretty much rigged on one side now (i always do 1 side first with complicated rigs incase something doesn't work out, this being a perfect example).
Here we go. I doesn't loop properly yet but he's in motion anyway..

WOW!
Very menacing.
So here is the symmetry work. I have removed a couple of things as he's become a little muddled. I've used many references to build him and some have been a little contradicting, certain pipes and even body structures are taken from the T600, T700 and the T800. I like where it is but i am aware it's not 100% Skynet issue..
So now all his rigging is ready, i can make him walk where i want and pretty much do what i want..

that is one mean looking terminator
It is indeed.
A lot closer imho to what the original Arnie T-800 should have looked.
Irony of ironies, they were going to cast Lance Henrikson in the part, and although they eventually went with Arnie, the original they'd already designed the Endo with Lance's body shape.
This one would TOTALLY be what would have been the result of Arnie being cast first!
Well done. It looks excellent when it's walking!

I saw that elsewhere in the new film, two t600's had another weapon. It turns out they were the F2000, a Belgian assault riffle. It looks very futuristic.

I'm sure you get to use this gun in COD:MW2
Lance Henrikson, Bishop, i never knew that..
It's on Lance Henrikson's IMDB page under "trivia".
I also read it in a terminator "making of" book.
The original idea was that The Terminator was an infiltration unit designed to look like a slightly-built guy, who would blend into a crowd without drawing attention. And when i think of an infiltration model, i don't immediately think of Arnie...
It's a shame we never saw Lance as The Terminator.
BUT...
I think the Terminator we are seeing in this thread looks a lot more like how the original Endo under Arnie's exterior SHOULD have looked.
Kudos!
