View Full Version : 3D Battlestar Prometheus (high poly version)

Infinity238
13th Dec 2006, 22:39
Yea, another BSG model get over it.

Well here it is, after much improvement I have returned to model my Battlestar Prometheus in high poly. The Prometheus was a lowpoly ship I origionally threw together in 3 hours to stand-in the backgroud of images with my Battlestar Cerberus, however the design really grew on me untill finally I had to model her properly in all her glory. As far as poly goes it is still a big step up from Cerberus but still fairly low (by some standards).

Now at the moment I just finished panneling up the top of the head, and I am slowly working my way stern.

Thats pretty well blocked out for a high poly ship. When will it go high poly?:shiner:

Neat work!

is the Prometheus a Mercury class or a variant of? It looks very remenicent except for the flight pods and engines.

13th Dec 2006, 23:32
Infinity,

Righteous.

I'm really interested in the architecture of her fantail (man, that sounds dirty!) and her ventral/undercarriage in general. Can we get a shot or two?

Did you use the light-tracer scheme to render that or was it radiosity?

punchface

P.S. Are you going to arm her?

Infinity238
14th Dec 2006, 01:48
I kind of have a very loose story for the Prometheus. Basicaly in early construction it was a Mercury class, but it became a test bed for further improvements in systems and weapons. I havent decided whether to still call it a mercury class.

Punchface - The "undercarriage" is for the most part non existant atm, the render was a light-tracer. As for weapons, I usually wait untill I am done for the most part because it adds anywhere from 10-20 thousand poly just in guns.

14th Dec 2006, 04:56
10-20k sounds about right. :)

Too bad about the ventral views...even from what I can see, whatever is under your ladies skirt looks it should be pretty darned interesting. So, uhh...if you see me walking around with mirrors on the toes of my shoes, just don't say anything okay? Thanks.

Can we at least get a better look at the stern?

peace,

Very nice start. Did you finish the high-poly Cerebrus?

Infinity238
15th Dec 2006, 01:36
Ahh, I just couldn't do it. I am quite attached to that model and I just couldn't remake it yet. Also some one else expressed interest in modeling a high poly Cerberus so I don't mind leaveing that option open for him.

Concade
15th Dec 2006, 02:07
10-20 thousand polygons sounds about right actually. That count should build as detail is added (how anyone gets to 3 million though... is beyond me).

Lookin good. Yet another fine ship to add to the fleet.

Infinity238
15th Dec 2006, 02:43
lol, no I was refering to the Gun turrets being 10 - 20 thousand poly considering one gun turret is like 1,000 poly with over 20 guns mounted. The thing I'm playing with is whether or not I want to use the generic kenetic gun, The model as is right now is over 40,000 poly.

Concade
15th Dec 2006, 05:05
I know:)

I'd be worried if the whole model was that size.

Infinity238
15th Dec 2006, 05:45
Little bit more done, I figured I would post an update because we have a big storm coming through tonight with hurrican force winds. So chances are I will loose my power tonight. By the way for those fermiliar with my Cerberus thread will notice the proper sized viper launch tubes.

Concade - so when can we see more of Polaris?

Ben of Oz
20th Dec 2006, 00:54
Nice mesh. The only comment I have is that maybe you could make the flight pod and center section less rounded. It doesn't fit that well into what we've seen in the new series. Unless it's a design feature you like, in which case, keep it.

Infinity238
20th Dec 2006, 01:46
Thanks I am slowly building my way aft, the reason I wanted to stay away from an angular body is because I want it to resemble the Mercury class with out looking exactly like one. I also have a differnt gun turret for the main top battery that looks like a WWII battleship gun along with the standard kenetic batteries, which should give her a bit more of a punch.

I went back and looked at some of your old Prometheus renders (low-poly), this is several huge steps up. Also, you said that you were not going to do the high-poly Cerebrus at this time, I think that that Battlestar is fine at the moment. Nice work!

Very cool battlestar.

I don't want to sound too ignorant, but I've only seen the first series of the re-imagined BSG down here in New Zealand (last thing I saw was Adama getting shot), and it seems to me that a few of the BSG projects around SFM represent intermediate designs between the new incarnation of the Galactica and the seventies version.

Is there a story line about such a ship after the 1st season and/or is it inferred that the latest battlestar is descended from the original style ships?

shipfisher
31st Dec 2006, 11:53
I've just been over at the "Pegasus Actual" site and have sort of answered my own question from the previous post, but the Pegasus, Prometheus, Sirius and such still look more like the original Galactica to me than the new one does, mostly due to the ribbed hull (no condom jokes please) on the latest big G.

mesh looks awsome man..but name is a bit confusing since there is already a ship called Prometheus in BSG

Infinity238
31st Dec 2006, 19:23
Is there? Which civy ship is it? Most of the time I just go on the list of the origional battlestar names. I know there was a battlestar Olympic in the old series, and in the new series the name was used for the Olympic carrier.

Edit:
Ahh the ship from the black market, huh for some reason I never rememberd that one. But still Its mearly a run down old freighter, quite possible that the owner simpy named her that not knowing that the was a Battlestar with the name already.;)

Is the freighter a civilian ship or a military ship? If it's a civilian ship, it wouldn't matter anyway, since the civilian authorities wouldn't worry about duplicating names of military ships. I'm sure it happens all the time.

I love the ship, but I just don't care for your dorsal gun turret design. I also dislike the layout of them. Very close to the engines with big blind spots, and it just looks weird in a crossed pattern. A square layout of the four turrets more towards the middle of the hull would look a lot better.

You need some more guns on the turrets as well. Some on the flight pods and maybe four more dorsally on the head area.

Galactica has what 24 turrets and Pegasus 40 turrets.

What I find is I not only get better with every battlestar, I get faster too. About two nights ago in about 5-6 hours I sat down and built a quick Mercury class for a fan comic I'm doing. I didnt spend too much time on her because she basicaly shows up for two or three pages than shows up as debris later.:D

I was thinking of releaseing this one because there is no Pegasus model available outside of coxxons ship pack here on scifi-meshes.

Thanks, just for you guys I have an update. Now these are some of the BIG kinetic guns that comprise the Prometheus primary anti-capital ship battery. These babies dwarf the valkyrie style guns in Prommies secondary battery.

There are two Instances that the Battlestar Prometheus is used, one in a Fanfic by Ryan Keeton and a CDF Chapter Called the Battlestar Prometheus, BSR-01, BTW you can find the pics of the ship on Keetons website, but go through this one: Battlestar Prometheus - (BSR-01) (http://bsr01.com/)

And how do I know this?

I'm 1st Lieutenant DDarr
XO, 3rd FLT Marine Regiment, 1st Battalion, Alpha HHC.
Battlestar Prometheus, BSR-01

Oh Yeah, and as the avatar shows, Klingon Marine Officer.lol.
P.S.
Good looking Battlestar, Looks simular to the Pegasus, but slightly different.

Infinity, you said most of your work prior to this and the Valkyrie was for mods. Which game and why is that work now "out the window"?

Lower poly versions of both of these ships would be great for the HW2 BSG mod.

Infinity238
15th Apr 2008, 18:27
Not sure where I said my work prior to valkyrie was only mod work, but prior to my joining this forum all I did was low poly game modding. I still do game modding as I run the Gundam Legacy mod over on petrolution. However my skills have improved thanks to the meny skilled artist here and the great creative atmosphere.

Since I'm posting I might as well throw an update up on the big board. Just a fun little render I did.:thumb:

gthompsn
15th Apr 2008, 20:25
...yeah, that's what I meant. With what you have learned here on these forums, how will that impact your modding work? Are you planning to revisit any of the low poly models?

Infinity238
15th Apr 2008, 21:39
Are there any models specifically that you thinking of?

gthompsn
15th Apr 2008, 22:08
I'm not part of any mod team, but I do think the HW2 BSG mod could use help implementing some of the models they are working on (like the Cygnus) as I think there's only one person on the team who is texturing models. Also, either the Prometheus or Cerberus or any other design you come up with could add a lot too (like speculative new Cylon designs or help with some of the mod's TOS ships).

Their mod is hosted at : SourceForge.net: HW2 Battlestar Galactica Mod (http://sourceforge.net/projects/hw2bsg/)

Adalla
15th Apr 2008, 23:04
Very nice model :) Great job.

However I'm wondering what you are using as reference?

I'm currently reading a Fan Fic called Battlestar Prometheus, that talks about the story of the Prometheus, which is according to the author a "Nova-class" Battlestar, the newest of the Fleet, launched right before the Fall of the 12 Colonies.

Here is a link to a picture the author put up to compare the Prometheus to other Battlestars, I am not sure what his source is either.

Battlestar Prometheus Comparison Chart (http://battlestar.prometheus.googlepages.com/listofships)

In the story, the Prometheus has 2 Viper squadrons and 1 Raptor squadron...while a Mercury-class Battlestar has 8 squadrons and 1 reserve, and the Galactica has 4 squadrons, to give you size comparisons. However on that chart, the Prometheus is the biggest Battlestar and the tech info says 4 Viper squadrons 1 Raptor squadron and 18 scimitar bombers.

I have a whole writeup on my Prometheus, but basiclly she was a Mercury clas when her keel was layed down but due to budget cuts she was never completed. After 8 months in limbo her semi completed hull was slated to be used as a testbed for new technology. Once completed she was intended to replace the ageing battlestar Cerberus as command ship of BSG-39.

Source for this? Just curious thanx.

Also, BSG stands for Battlestar Group right? how many Battlestars usually in a BSG? also does the BSG take the number of the lead battlestar? so BS-75 is command ship for BSG-75?

Infinity238
17th Apr 2008, 07:10
I made it up around this post. (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/12450-wip-battlestar-cerberus-10.html) As for BSG the show is not to clear how this works, my guess would be the group assumes the number of the lead battlestar.

Not wanting to nitpick, but the comic show's Poseidon's port batteries instead of her starboard guns, and a typo in starboard, but as you said, they are outdated anyway

My house. There isn't a whole lot done yet, mostly because I need to finish a couple of things up first before I go any further.

Ooops, the image must have been mirrored in PS... cant beleive I missed that. I was going have to redo that one anyways since I've updated my Poseiden model.
