Well I am new here, and I figured I would start a new wip here. I looked around and felt bad that I wasn't a member, when the,"Sensei Challenge: Carriers",was given out, so I thought, it would be a great way to introduce myself at this site. So here goes: First stage: Pick a shape.

Playing with shapes, and how I want them to look, as well as where I want to see lighted sections, effects and other places of interest! Color is not important, so you'll probably shift through many hues, untill I am close on color. Also, do not confuse color with texture or UV Map.

Pulse,
Great way to start a thread, rofl. Pick a shape, show two blocks with holes in em and call it a carrier. I go like, huh?!?
Then post a picture what you're doing with those shapes and now i'm going, damn this guy is on to something.
Can't wait to see where you're going to take this! Keep us updated :)
Would be a nice compo idea btw. Take a simple shape, see where you can take it...

Easy: grab the money, grab the girl and run to the getaway car....oh wait, you mean the carrier....
It is a nice shape overall, intersting to see where you go from here....

I changed the gear like circumfrance from the hole in the main deck, to show simple cut outs, or series of extruded areas to give a sense of deck levels. Also, for those who've asked, the whole is for small cruiser's and transport vehicle for loading and unloading of materials etc.... Also the negative, boolean area gives a interst to a normaly boring shape. I worked on areas and removed others. I think ounce these areas have lights and possible small aircraft in them, to represent hangar bays, will definately make this craft look pretty cool!
Also, when I thought of the whole in the deck, I was thinking along the lines of the ringed elevator style of transport, seen in Stargate. I could see a small brigade of Mechs and troops transported down to the surface of a planet!

Adding points of Interest. Well, A large space vehicle, isn't complete without defensive and offensive weapons. I usually put these in first so when I do my light maps, it adds more texture to the craft/vehicle. Some Large and Medium guns are cloned and added in series to to different levels of the carrier body!

Hey Welcome to SFM mate!
I really like the design, especially the 'negative space' you have in the middle... very hard to work with, but extremely cool if you can pull it off!
Keep at it:thumb:

Not to confuse anyone, I have sort of jumped ahead a bit, because I need to work alittle on my, or the desired shape. Added a central tower and some fins above and below. They may stay or they may go, but for now I have my desired shape. The two main drags or runways, which I wanted to have for larger craft, may stay or may be changed into a battle group, such as Canons and such. Right now, I'm still in the experimental stage, but honing my overall shape and preparing for extra extremeties, like antenna's, boxes, tanks and other protrusions! I prefer working in a pen/ink style mat at this stage. It sometimes gives me an idea where I want stuff to go, but not always! Also, their is a reason for those who are wondering why their is a valley down the center. Well, I thought It would be a change to have a Battle Carrier to have a corridor for Fighters and other type vehicles to have some defense other than just a shielded wall or guarded strictly by defensive weapons. Just a thought,hehehhee......oh Merry Christmas!

Very cool design. And everyone should love homeworld. If you don't, you haven't played it enough. Even my GF likes homeworld and she doesn't like sci-fi as a whole.

Great ship so far. I'll be keeping an eye on it's development.
ok,...........First I would like to apollogise for never finishing this but Starting today will complete this but starting from scratch! I ahave been so busy trying to model for FOA and now 2 other Game projects, I have missed out on stuff for fun. I will start with this, familiar design but with a new and fresh approach! I took the same idea but refined the overall hull and added a lower deck under the negative space to give it some contrast and interest.

I don't think I saw this the first time around . . . interesting design you have there :thumb
I think I like this variation the best :D

can't wait to see it develop
small update! Also, I am not sure some modelers will like me giving secrets away, but this was the main reason for me joining here! If you Use 3dsmax 8 or 9, in your default materials list, there is a very useful material called "ink!" You can use this, using variable ink line thicknesses, to show detail, and eventually using it as a bump or diffuse map, to bring out the multi-paneling in your hulls. I also increase the amount of shade levels, to give it a smooth look. In the Ink parameters, ( I like using parameters of 0.5 to 2.5) and clamping them to give the model a sharp edge. Make sure to uncheck overlapping!
In this update, I wanted to show some paneling of the hull and points of interest. The round negative section has numerous hangars and ports along its' walls and different areas along side and ontop of the deck!

This is amazing :thumb: I love the overall shape and the details you have given the negative space and all its hangars and the small 'fins' on the side too.
I really want to see more of the back end too (engines, etc...)
Can you show a close up of the weapons once you are ready?
Thanks :thumb:

Looks really nice :thumb: If you're using ink n' paint be sure to render your scenes with mental ray because even in the higher sample settings it renders faster than scanline. (btw as far as I remember the material was there even in max 5 or earlier)
Anyway, I can't wait to see more of the ship. Are you planning some sort of cartoon scenes or is this just a model-based project ?
I am going to do the weapons and engines next, Cavebear. Still figuring on the style of weapons and assortments, arrangements, etc,.. And Soma, I agree with ya, just posting that tidbit for those just starting out in Max.
Soma, your next part of your question, I was thinking about using this for a possible Homeworld 2 Mod, but this model, is Exclusive to all you guys on this site, meaning, you want to use it, just email me @ tiny595@hotmail.com or find me on MSN IM and I will send it to you.
Ok guys, last update for tonight, I need to drink down some suds! I added a texture to give me an idea, for the hull! It's definately a Homeworld like look! Anyway, here are some updates. I added some fins or wings, you can be the judge! Also I am not sure about the engines, but if you have a idea or different approach, by all means say something now! But, I hate round nozzle like engines!
Here ya'go!:

I am sorry for posting at such great size, but I wanted you the viewer to see where I was going in this model, vs's the old one which I posted so long ago! Try to keep them a bit smaller!
Itis funny but I am getting some interesting feedback on the earlier model, so I will continue this one and as a challenge to my self will try to also re-do the first one, apparently there are some that really liked the Robotech style one I started this thread with! That's scifi modeling for ya,hehehehehehehe!
Ok, I downloaded the old pic of the model, because I remember losing that in the PC I trashed. I tried to follow the structure as close as possible but adding a points of interest, like engines ports, nose ports, or canons and added a tower! I hope for those who liked the older style accept this with equal enthusiasm!

You kiddin'? That's definitely a great refit (?), upgrade (?), anyway a nice rework of the old one. :thumb:
i finished out the tower structures and removed the engines. I want the engines to be incorporated with the hull, and not a outside entity. I think I am ready for the weapons and other points of interest!

Nice work. What's the vertical thing?
ok I added a bit more to the control towers and added some deck guns, and belly defense guns, and rocket salvos. The next thing will be the actual mesh, and decided this will not be a Homeworld mesh! This model is too kickass for Homeworld 2!!
The vertical thing is the same model, just to show it in a opposing direction.

Aresius, your welcome to critic, or add anything you like. Wishlist or add ons,etc.. but thanks!
ok, this is no where close to being done, but I wanted to get a general idea, so when I got out of work, i came home and UVUnwrapped and mapped this. Its a bit choppy in some areas but it gives be something to go by when I texture in in max.

i think it needs a few support beams along the mid section togive it more strength
nah, the middle area has plenty of support, here does this help!

Wow. Now that's nice.
i think it would be best for everybody if this thing could morph into a giant robot.
that's an idea, but way to many polygons!
